I recently purchased a nice 1978 model 41. It has the 7 inch tapered barrel. There's a mark on the left side of the barrel a little back from the bore. Looks to be about a millimeter or two long, straight up and down. I think I read this is an accuracy proof mark. Any conformation of this, or other explanation.

The mark you refer to is the counterweight alignment mark.

Thanks alot! Is the weight set still sold new and at what price? I'm looking at one on auction now, and don't want to pay too much.

S&W no longer offers the weight set for the 41, and original sets are valuable to collectors so they get pricey. There were two different weight sets offered for the 41, one was all steel with a blued finish and the other set had a black anodized alloy and blued steel combination that is lighter in weight. The weight sets are adjustable for balance which is a great feature, so they are more than one piece for a complete set. There is a seller on Gunbroker that offers a replica weight set in either all steel or the alloy/steel combo, his price is $250 for a set-real ones are much more if in nice shape. Just as a note of information, I have a set of the aluminum/steel weights which I bought new in the late 60s. At the time I was convinced that with a bit of practice I could become an Olympic rapid fire competitor. The fact is that even the strong have a problem holding an M41 with the weight set installed at arms length with one hand. With both hands weights are not necessary for most. My weights were used very few times.
As a practical matter IMO there are better Olympic rapid fire pistols available in .22 short than the M41-1 w/weights.
Roger.

Thanks for the info. I'm a truck driver so I didn't get to respond too quickly. Well I mostly got the 41 for a woods varmint and small game pistol anyway. So I really don't need the weights. Just wanted the best 22lr pistol {American made} that I could get. Hope to get well aquainted with it this summer!
