I have a series 80 that is missing the 2 part safety in the frame. I tried to use a conversion shim from TJ'S Custom gunworks that did not work. Anyone have any experience with replacing the series 80 to work with the shim? It seems that the s&w series 80 2 part safety is a little different than most series 80 1911's. Does anyone have the 2 part safety they would sell? If possible can someone email me a few pictures of the series 80 safety out of the firearm. As I think the s&w series 80 safeties are a little [email protected] Thank You

Pretty sure they're the same. I have S&W 80 series and Colt's 80 and 70's, the 80's look the same to me other than the extractor? Tolerances maybe?
Or, just put it back to an 80 series, easier. You can't tell the difference with a good trigger anyways?

Are you sure it's a series 80? It's my understanding that Smith uses the Swartz safety system, where the grip safety pushes on a rod to in turn push up on the plunger that blocks the firing pin.

Broadly similar to the system used on the MP's with their grip safety.

The SW S1911 guns do not use the Colt Series 80 type firing pin obstruction, nor the Colt/Swartz firing pin block as copied by Kimber; it is their own design.
As far as I know, if you want to shim it out, you will have to make your own.

If you want to restore it, you will have to beg S&W for the parts or more likely send them the gun for Authorized Personnel to work on a safety device.

Hey Jim thanks so much. I have come to the conclusion S&W has their own design. I e-mailed S&W Gunsmith and am waiting for a reply.

Hey 03Hemi I got a small dilemma and I hope you can help. I talked to S&W with no result. Is it possible for you to disassemble your series 80 1911 and send me a picture of the trigger bar lever. I may can make one. There are no schematics, I have looked everywhere. I am a Gunsmith here in Jacksonville, AR and I will do you a return favor. [email protected] tele 501-291-7556

Well, I learned something new today!
I just assumed they were the same, that's what I get for assuming. lol

If you're talking about one of my Colts, no problem?
If you're talking about my "E" Series, I've never completely taken that one apart so let me check into it, but it shouldn't be a problem.
I'm building a screened-in porch and trying to finish my study this weekend, so it may be a week or so before I can get to it? I can do it, I'm just slow and methodical at it. lol

03hemi thanks so much I will be anxiously waiting but you do your thing on your stuff. Thanks, Gene Brown

Jim yes the S&W series 80 has has a firing pin plunger lever in the frame and is a blocking safety.

Yes. S&W used a mechanical firing pin safety designed in house by a fellow named Mochak (I think). The only way it is similar to the old Colt Swartz system is that it is based off the grip safety and not the trigger as a Colt Series 80 system is. Below the bottom of the slides of a pre Series 80 Colt on the left. Then a Series 80 Colt. Next a Kimber with its safety based on the old Colt Swartz safety. And on the Right is a S&W.

And the top of the frames in the same order showing the lever or pin that pushes up the plunger and lets the firing pin move forward

I am not near that older S&W right now. The newer E's and Perf Center 1911s do not have a mechanical firing pin safety.
