How do you tell (by eye) and is there a date & serial number range (looking at 1006) for when this happened?

The slide cuts are the easy way to see the difference. Based on the two 915s I've owned, the change was around 93-94.

Narrow hood?

Looks like Barsto is out of barrels for these now unless they make a new run.

When I was gathering parts for my Franken-Smith 639, hood width was my big stumbling block. After looking vainly for a wide hood barrel from a 915 for that slide I’d picked up for several weeks, I ended up swapping it off out of frustration!

Yes.

During manufacturing, the wide hood barrel reduces the number of machining operations on the slide assembly.

In operation, it keeps the breech face cleaner by eliminating areas where fouling builds up.

So when looking for a 10mm, is one more desirable than the other? Price differential?

That makes sense.

From post above, it appears you dont really have a choice of hoods per se except for the 1006 - the "compact" version with shorter barrel 1066, 1076, 1086 have the wide hood and the longer barreled 1026 (1046?) have the narrow hood except for the 1006 which you may have a choice.

From a standpoint of collectibility, I have witnessed no discernible difference in price or desirability.

I imagine very few owners or covetors have any idea or concept of the difference in barrel hood width.

From a standpoint of functionality, the wide barrel hood was an improvement, so for me, that makes it more desirable, although my 1006 has the narrow hood and it doesn't bother me... much. ;)

Thanks, that's what I was thinking...since I am one of those who, until this thread, didn't know. :)
