457 versus 4553, 4513, 4516 Slide Contour - Difference?

I undertand that Smith value line pistols, like the 457, have slides less contoured than their counterparts. Smith machined and milled them to a lesser extent to reduce cost. I have never held them side-by-side and cannot determine if this a significant difference.

Why does it matter? Well, I usually carry AIWB and have a local company (Watchdog Tactical) that molds AIWB holsters for my third-gen pistols. Have a 4553 and likely buying a 457. The Kydex holsters are molded precisely and less likely to accomodate variation than leather. That said, I suspect that a holster molded to fit 457 square edges would work just fine with a contoured 4553, 4516, etc...if I undersand the difference in shape. It may be insignificant.

Could somebody post a side-by-side to show the difference?

Also, feel free to hijack this thread with any comments, photos, or other information about the 457 generaly or as compared to the 45XX models. Thanks.

I have 3 457's , one is a nib 457S . One of the others guzzitaco did a full on custom treatment on , I call it my BBQ gun . He did a thread on it , and this was before he got his mill . I have an attachment to these guns , I think they are under rated . If you pick that one up and shoot it , you'll see what I mean .

I only own one kydex holster, for a 4513TSW, so I am of limited assistance to you. I can tell you that my 457 WILL NOT go into the kydex holster. The slide profile prevents it.

My 4516 WILL go into the kydex holster. The slides of the 4516-1 and later dash and 4513 are, for all intents and purposes, the same. The 457 has more angular edges to the slide and a wider flat running along the top of the slide.

My 457s also will not go into a few of the fitted leather holsters for my 4516s and 4513s.

The 457s DO work in the looser leather holsters for the other models as well as holsters made for Sig 228/229s and Glock 19/30 holsters.

Once you aquire your 457 I would take it over to Watchdog and let them mold from it. Good kydex holster maker BTW. We sell their products at the range. Hope this helps! Regards 18DAI

Sorry that I didn’t post these pictures sooner.

The top slide is a 457S and the bottom is a 4516-2.

As was already said, a 457 doesn’t really like to fit in a precise/tight 4516 holster regardless of material. It’s the same with a 908 in some 3913 holsters or even a 3913 in some 3913NL, (or LS I suppose,) ones.

Thank you 18DAI and 4T5GUY. That’s what I needed. I suspect that the radiused edges of the 4553, etc., will fit a holster molded to the high sides of a 457, but not the other way around. If not, I’ll just have them make one for each. Pics were helpful 4T5GUY.

Snagged a two tone and high condition 457 off the big auction site this evening. Comes with three mags.

18DAI, yes, the guys at Watchdog have been great. They have done several of my third gens and a few odd revolvers. Will make the holster same day if I drop off the gun by early afternoon. I tweak them a bit, adding Discreet Carry Clips and a small foam wedge.

I was actually watching. I think all of the two tone’s look really nice. Glad you got it.

The 457’s are underrated, (well not here so much,) and I’m sure you will find it to be a really nice pistol.
