CSX Magazine Problem

So I picked up a CSX last week just a few days after buying a 3913 TSW. The 3913 is great, but a little too big to serve in place of my G43 when I need to be very discreet (i.e. pocket carry) at work so the plan is the CSX will replace the Glock for EDC.

On my first range trip with the CSX, I did discover one problem: the 10 round magazine will not seat when fully loaded and there is a round chambered, so you cannot top up and carry 10+1. There is no issue with the 12 round, or seating the 10 round when there is not a round in the chamber or with only 9 loaded and one in the chamber. The gunsmith at the range says he has seen this and expects S&W will make it a warranty issue.

There were no malfunctions of any kind while firing with either magazine firing about 140 rounds total, but I shot ten round groups and never tried to seat either magazine on a loaded chamber until I was off the firing line.

I had this problem also, and when I took the guts out of the magazine, I found the spring was in backwards. Out of ten mags, two of them were like this.
Once corrected, I had no issues. I leave all my magazines loaded, and have found they became much easier to load after a week or so of sitting loaded.

My recollection is there were a number of problems with early CSX mags - SW was replacing under warranty but for a while none were available - possible mods? - replacements now available?

Magazines are now on the shelf for $38 in my area in most of the better gun shops. I found a couple of 12-round mags would not drop free when loaded, and they were replaced by S&W. I just had to wait on hold for a very long time with customer service. Since I dont make $76 an hour, it was worth it for me.

My 10rd and 12rd. mag wouldn't drop free when fully loaded. I sent in the 10rd. mag for warranty replacement, but the new one they sent back did the same thing. When I talked to them a second time they acted like the problem didn't exist. The mags swell when loaded (doesn't even have to be fully loaded), but the company doesn't see a problem.

That was a real problem for me. I heard a lot of “train to rip the mag” from a lot of people (who were at none of my gunfights).
I think maybe I just got lucky with mags. Leave yours loaded for a while and see what happens. I bet the problem goes away.

I left mine loaded 24/7 and it didn't make a difference. The mags just swell. I sold my CSX for as much as I paid for it so no loss, but there are kinks in the design that need to be ironed out.

My 12 round mag lost the plastic grip spacer. I have only had the gun to the range once and never noticed this piece missing when I put it away. Why wouldn't they make that piece fit snugly? Not very happy about spending that kind of money and having pieces fall off the first time I used it.

I wrote to them - let's see if they send me a replacement spacer.

I crazyglued them to the bases. I recognize that I will have to break it loose from there to get the magazine apart for cleaning, but crazyglue is cheap.

Just a quick follow-up: the 10 round magazine now seats, and both 10 and 12 round versions have always dropped out when full or otherwise. I will keep an eye on the topic to see if others report similar problems, but as there has been no failure to function while firing, at this point I am not too concerned.

The fix for 10 and 12 round mags is to reverse the side of the follower the spring attaches to ... it should be the short side... evidently whoever S&W got to assemble the mags for CSX put them backwards (attached to the high side) ... mine work just perfectly now

So far no issues. Granted, only put 50+ through it but, I was able to put both the 12 and the 10 in with a round in the pipe.

It is a bit$% to get #12 and #10 in the mag though. I am assuming that after having them fully loaded, the spring will give a little.

I had a little trouble with the ten round mag, getting it fully loaded and inserted with a round in the chamber at first. And when I say "at first" I mean the first couple of times I tried it. Once it went in, the problem seemed to go away. No problem with either of them dropping free.

I picked up a couple of extra 12 round mags as soon as I saw them available. The ten round one now occupies space in the Bag O Mags in the safe.

I’m surprised S&W CS didn’t recommend putting 100rds through the mags to loosen them up? Never the less, I’ve found the CSX to be an easy pistol to shoot one handed. Not bad ;)

My 12 round mag is a beauty. Loads easily, seats perfect and runs great. My 10 round mag is abysmal. It sounds like a box of nerds when loaded to 10 and won’t seat in the gun if the slide is forward. No matter how hard I try. Ive taken it apart and verified that it’s assembled properly. I’m throwin it straight into the trash when I get some more 12’s.
