Hi Guys,

just a quick one for you. Do 4506 mags work in the 645 ?

I thought it best to ask those that know rather than rely on google.

I am about to get a nice 645 but need a few mags.

Thanks for the help

Congratulations on the 645! A great pistol. I believe the magazines are interchangeable. However, the mag I have that is supposedly a 4506 is not marked any differently than my 645 magazine. I also have a magazine with a black polymer bottom cover of unknown origin. None of mine has a S&W logo. All three mags work great. I would feel better answer this question if I also had a 4506 pistol (I should fix that)

Remember, if you cannot get the job done with 9 45 ACP rounds, you should have brought a rifle, or a friend, or both.

Thanks Heinz,
I appreciate your help & I'm very much looking forward to getting it next week & will put up some pics of course.
Thanks again.

4506 magazines work just fine in the 645 and are actually more reliable and more durable that the original 645 magazines. Obtaining magazines these days boils down to what you can get or cobble together from parts.

My advice would be to stay away from magazines that have a metal floor plate that is retained by a small tab spring at the bottom edge of the magazine body. These floor plates have been known to slide off during a hard magazine change. Metal or plastic base plates that have the retention button in the bottom of the plate are fine.

The original metal followers can also cause issues with feeding, but the plastic followers are much better. The first of the plastic followers was orange, then came yellow which were to be used with magazines stamped with a warning to use only yellow followers. The last version, and I think these work in the yellow follower magazines too, is the black follower.

Get ready to spend some money, genuine S&W 645/4506 magazines are not cheap these days and I do not recommend the ProMag magazine... unless you feel lucky or like to practice clearing jams.

Greetings!

I don't mean to hijack the thread but can you give me an idea of a fair price for S&W 8 round 45 acp magazines?

A friend of mine's father passed away and he found a bunch of pistol magazines, 4 of which are S&W 45's in a drawer in the garage. His father really wasn't a gun guy and there are no other gun related items. I told him I would try to determine a fair price for him and suggested that he sell them here to benefit the true S&W collectors and accumulators.

I have been unable to find any real price data as everything either gets snapped up immediately or the asking price gets taken down when the item sells.

Thank you for any input.

Thanks heaps Stansdds,
very informative & helpful. Thanks so much.

4506 mags (and for that matter most of the common 3rd gen mags - except 10mm and the odd ones) are readily available in the $60-80 range. I would buy most at $50 and under (except 5906 currently available at Midway new at $36 and other places used $30 and under)

Not to hijack the OP’s thread, but vice versa, will 645 mags function in a 4506? I am piecing together a mag collection for my newly acquired 645 that only came with one original metal follower/metal floorplate mag. I’ve since acquired an additional metal follower/metal floorplate mag as well as four orange plastic follower/metal floorplate mags. I believe these are all 645 mags. I plan to acquire hopefully an early 4506 with square triggerguard at some point.

I just bought two 4506 mags for $60 shipped and didn't hesitate as the price for a single mag has been climbing the last number of years.
