Just purchased a new to me 6904 and 5906.

During the field strip of both I noticed that the 6904 does not have an ejector depressor, (i.e. no magazine safety).

After a little study on this forum, I'm not concerned about it. However, I'd like to know if this 6904 was a special order or if the modification was done after purchase.

Does anyone know if S&W has provided 3rd Gen semi-auto's w/o the mag safety as a special order?

I called S&W to ask and determine the age of the pistols. They were able provide the age, but couldn't provide any info about the mag safety.

Is there a 'hole' in the slide where the plunger and spring could go?

I had a 4006 made without a magazine safety and I know there where other models too (some 1076's, etc.)

Yes there is.

At first I suspected it might be an LE trade-in. But there is no holster wear. Some of the finish is chipped off on the slide release lever and decocker. According to S&W it was made in 1991, and as such it is in very good shape.

Thanks

That's intereting.

So if someone requested a 3rd Generation pistol w/o the mag safety, then S&W would not have machined the hole for the ejector spring?

The 6904 has night sights. I assumed they were Novaks. Turns out they are Meprolights Tru Dot Mh3's . Assuming that they are aftermarket then maybe the mag safety was removed when the sight was installed.

I can't speak for every 3rd gen S&W w/o the mag safety but the ones I have seen did not the hole machined. Does it have something like this on the right side of the slide? I'm pretty sure that all the ones made w/o a mag safety had this warning on them.

you would have to remove the rear sight to remove the spring and plunger.

That warning is definitely not there. Looks like an after market change.

Thanks

abs-1, many law enforcement pistols have the hole in the slide but were shipped to the LE agency without the mag disconnect. I have several lettered 1076s that way. Also, the LE caution statement may or may not be on the slide according to the preferences of the LE agency. For example, after receiving 1076s with the statement the FBI instructed S&W to delete it on all future deliveries. Bottom line is you can't determine whether your pistol(s) are law enforcement or not. You must get a letter from Roy Jinks. If you do, let me know. Thanks, D
