What are the advantages to a pistol in this caliber? My shop has a 1026 for sale and may buy it. Just not sure if I want to add another caliber to my collection.

The 10mm, ill faded round adopted then rejected by the FBI, is the forerunner of the .40S&W. It is a high energy round that exceeds .357 magnum power and approaches that of the 41 magnum. That said, most consider it more than necessary for SD/HD but valued for hunting and backwoods carry. If you handload you can load it hot to take advantage of 10mm power or cold for lessor .40 S&W energy. If you buy ammo you'll pay a premium price just as one does for other "magnum" cartridges. Be careful to check the ballistic of 10mm ammo before you purchase same. Most 10mm ammo is loaded to FBI standards, often called 10mm lite, which is almost the same as .40S&W.

It is what the .41 Magnum was touted to be: A very powerful LE round that can be used for PD/duty plus the versatility for hunting/predator defense. Add to that the increased number of RDS available in a clip VS the .41's 6 and the fast reloads, and you have a winner no matter your game (pardon the pun).

If you reload, things are even sweeter, because the offspring of the 10-.40 S&W uses the same bullets, making brass your only limited component (and not very at that). You can send 135 grain bullets screaming out the muzzle or lob some cast bullets at sedate velocities or load up some 200+ grain loads that will punch through deer or hog.

I think the Rd is underrated. I cannot think of a more versatile auto cartridge available.

Enjoy it.

The best factory ammo you can get for the 10mm comes from Doubletap or CorBon. As other posters have said the 10mm is a magnum power level cartridge that falls between the .357 and the .41 in power range. A lot of the main stream ammo out there from Federal or Winchester will not be loaded to full potential, but the Silvertip from Winchester is about the best. If you want a pistol that has some umph, this would be the caliber to get.

The only way to shoot 10mm economically is to load it. There are so many variations in loads and bullet weights. Very expensive round if your buying it from the shop.

I wholeheartedly agree with shooter429 and especially so in the 1026. That pistol's weight and semiauto function tame the cartridge so that it is very easy to shoot the hotter rounds.

Expense-wise I think it suffers from the same impression that many have of the 357Sig round. They see a box in a gunshop and it is expensive. However, if you look around a bit and buy in some volume it's not nearly as bad as some would make it.

Reed's ammo and Research in Oklahoma City sells 50 rnds of 180 gr FMJ practice ammo for ~$21/box (but you need to buy a number of boxes to offset shipping) and Georgia Arms sells similar ammo for something around $18/box (same deal with spreading the shipping). Both of those fire the 180 gr load at about 1150 fps. I don't consider those prices outrageous when Win White Box 40s go for about $15.

Unfortunately that applies to just about all ammo these days, not just 10mm.

At Gander Mountain the other day they had American Eagle 10mm for $30 a box of 50 (180gr FMJ). A 100rd box of Remington 45 ACP, (230gr JHP) was $69.00

Man I would not mind a nice sweet deal on a 1026 if in good shape. Who cares about a silly box or papers for a shooter.

I could be interested also if price is right.

He's asking $525 and I don't know how many mags. I was thinking about it but spoke to S&W today and they said the 1911 9MM Pro had already shipped in limited quantities and that is what I really want.

To be fair I will send an Email to firecaptian cause he asked first. Also I have no personal interest in the gun or the dealer.

PS I really wanted this pistol cause of its limited numbers produced but the Pro is calling to me. Oh well have to be content with the NIB 4596.

The basic 1911 design is a fine gun, and handles and carries easily. However, what bill_in_TX said is true. My son gave me a 1026, and I was surprised at how reasonable the recoil was with full-power loads. It also shot to POA, which is a nice thing in a fixed-sight (Novak!) gun. Very simple manual of arms, just like the original American Sig-Sauer 225, 226, 228. Wide ammo choice. I can't think of anything I don't like about that pistol.

You must have brought your kid up right . I had to buy my own.

Mine also shot well with the original Novak sights. I've replaced them with Mepro night sights and am still tweaking the windage to get it back on target.

It's interesting that you compare the 1026 to Sigs. That's a major reason why I looked for, and bought, that model. I have several Sigs and the 1026 or 1076 drops right in like it's one of the gang.

The only disadvantage that I can see to the 1026 is a key shooting advantage. The weight that helps modulate recoil can also drag on you a bit after 7-8 hours of carrying it.

.41mag...that reminds me...I need to go downstairs and hug my 6" mod. 57. What a sweet shooting revolver. Double Tap makes some great loads for the .41 mag.

There are other fine rounds. The 10mm was built around the 180 and 200 gr bullets. Many people prefer lighter. However WInchester still makes the 175gr Silvertips that hit at 630 ft lbs ( about $22 for 20), Atomic Ammo makes some 180 gr that hit at 650 ft lbs (50 rds for $39), Underwood Ammo make lots their 180's hit at over 700 ft lbs (50rds for $35) and a 135gr that hits at over 800ft lbs (50 rds for $35). Those are all loaded where the 10mm is supposed to. You can get good deals on ammo at gun shows (Georgia Arms 500 rds for around $210 and it loaded to proper pressures).

The way things are going you all may want to start rolling you own!
Handloading is very rewarding hobby and you get to tailor the rounds to your own guns! Sure it cost a few bucks to get started, but in the future it may pay dividens...

Nothing says lovin' like sending your very best down range!

What powder are most of you reloaders using for 180 & 200 grain bullets in 10 ammo?
Thanks - J.Solo

The DoubleTap name has been tarnished in recent years. There are multiple Youtube chronograph videos from various sources showing their rounds are underpowered by as much as 300fps off of claims. Avoid.

Underwood Ammo is where 10mm is at. They equal or exceed claims.

Underwood has been using IMR800X in their line up, it is a little harder to meter due to the larger flakes, but you can argue with the performance.

I use Blue Dot, Power Pistol, IMR800X, LongShot, AA#7 & AA#9 depending on what projectile design and weight I am loading...All great 10mm powders BTW.

I have owned Glocks in 10mm since the early 1990s when they came out. My current one is a 3rd generation G-20 SF. It is my rural/woods carry gun with Underwood or Buffalo Bore 180 grain ammo and the six inch Glock factory barrel installed. It provides very hot .357 magnum level or entry level .41 magnum ballistics with 15+1 capacity.

If I feel the need for more power, I add a .44 magnum revolver, my Desert Eagle 50AE, or my S&W 460XVR revolver.

Buffalo Bore also has great factory ammo for the 10mm. Their 180gr hits at 735ftlbs if I recall correctly. They claim SAAMI pressures.

I shoot it out of a 1006 and STI Perfect 10, so recoil isn't bad.

Others have pretty much covered it, but I will just add that 10mm is one of my favorite calibers due to its versatility. I probably would not own as many 10mm handguns as I do (610, 1076, 1006, Glock 20sf, Glock 29, and custom 1911) if I did not reload however, because good range ammo is hard to find and pricey. Now I just wish S&W would get off their fannies and develop an M&P chambered in 10mm and I would have one more!
