Default S&W repair turnaround time

I have a 1911SC up at S&W for repair - mostly a front sight which doesn't glow (less than a year old), and a maybe stovepipe issue.

What's the turnaround time nowadays? Sent it in in late Aug.; got an email a few days later on 26 August. Haven't heard since; sent an email to Customer service a week ago asking what the time would be like, haven't heard. So, asking from someone with recent experience.

They are in the middle of a big move. Until that is done, repairs will be slow.

What post #2 said. Also, my experience was last year I had the gun store send my gun back for repair. Little over 2 months I got it back. It wasn't right and got sent back again. Two more months the shop owner had the gun sent back and he fixed it in about a half hour. Hope this helps; hang in there.

2 weeks ago, I got back a brand new CSX I sent in for a defective barrel. It took almost 8 weeks on the nose for it to come back. That period of time did include their normal 2 week late summer factory shutdown. I don't know if they had their normal shutdown this year due to the big move. But figure 6-8 weeks.

Thanks, everyone. So, I'll just sit patiently, sounds like 6-8 weeks is the consensus. Dummy me didn't send the card in within the first month - it's a bit under a year old - so I hope they don't charge me.

They won’t charge you.

Folks sure are impatient!

Smith’s turnaround time for simple repairs of 6-8 weeks is blindingly fast in the world of gunsmiths. They are comparatively quick.

Six months is more representative of good gunsmith shop turn around time.

Seems like Ruger has a pretty quick turnaround compared to other players in the game.
I haven’t heard of any more than two and a half weeks for a Ruger revolver, but it may have happened. Not in my experience.

Default I just got my Shield back......

I think I sent it early August. A few weeks later I got an acknowledgement that it was in the pipeline. I just got it back late last week.

Taurus has a quick turn around. 10 days from dropping it at UPS and getting it back.

Thanks again. Not really impatient, just wondering, especially as I had not heard an answer to an email. Sort of an "Uh-oh" feeling. Since I got my acknowledgement of initial receipt the 26th of Aug, it should be soon. Great.

I've got 'back up' guns so the time isn't THAT important. But you wonder if it hasn't been waylaid somewhere. I was expecting to eventually get a note that said my gun couldn't be repaired but offering me a deal on another one.

In my case, it wasn't impatience as it was frustration with the whole situation. Yes I have other firearms to use while my brand new gun is back at Smith & Wesson, but that is not the point. I bought a brand new firearm, looked it over as best I could in the shop before taking delivery. After getting it home and cleaning out the test firing residue discovered the barrel was obviously defective and should never have left the station that manufactured the barrel, or been installed in the gun during assembly, or made it past ANY type of pre-test firing inspection. Without getting to fire a single round through the gun it had to be sent back to get a usable barrel installed.
I monitor several different firearms forums and from the number of brand new S&W guns reportedly being sold and then returned for very obvious flaws/defects, it is obvious that there is a lack of quality control at Smith & Wesson. Smith & Wesson is beginning to mimic the old Taurus problems.
The bitter topping on the cake is that it takes them 6-8 weeks to return a customer's NEW firearm. On top of that, I am seeing more reports of firearms submitted for repair having to go back repeatedly to get them fixed properly.

federal law prevents voiding the warranty if you don't register it.

Unless there is some sort of charges, you won't hear from them at all. Next thing you will see is your gun being delivered and or an email notification from Fedex, if you have that setup, telling you a package from SAW is on it's way. Oh, and there likely won't be anything with the gun telling you exactly what they did to it. Maybe a receipt with parts listed, but no real description.

I have never filled out a S&W warranty card and have sent in multiple guns I didn't buy new, never had them deny warranty work.

My recent experience was 7 weeks to the day from when I dropped it off at fedex to when fedex delivered back to me. Revolver was fixed and is just fine now.

Just sent my Shield + back and it was about 3 weeks door to door. No communication from Smith after the email about receiving it. Invoice just said replaced grip screw and test fired... wondering what grip screw they replaced since the trouble was with the optic cut threads....

Did they repair the optic cut threads?

I recently got one back in less than one month, which greatly surprised me. It was an extractor replacement, on of the fingers had been broken off about half of it's length. Model 22-4.

Not sure how long they are taking now. I was told 3-4 weeks but been 4 weeks and still in cue to be looked at according to customer service today. Brand new 617 with a badly milled extractor.
