There was one for sale during last weekend's gun show and I enquired about it but did not handle it, now I'm curious about it. Since I am in the elderly class most of my experience has been with revolvers so I know very little about the semi-autos. Will someone please give me the details as to this specific Model 4586? Someone did state that is a double action only and I may have a chance to purchase if he hasn't already sold it. Thank you for the information and any recommendations regarding the purchase.

A 4586 is one of the few DAO semi's I own . It took me a while to get a handle on DAO as I never had an inkling to own one . Once I got one and started taking it to the range , I found that I liked them . I now have one in 9mm , 40 and 45 . They'll never take the place of one of my single action PC guns , but they do have a place in my safes . Buy it if it's at a fair price .

It's commonly said that revolver guys adapt to DAO pistols better.

I was a revolver guy long before I was a pistol guy & even though I shoot revolvers mainly single-action for bullseye shooting I like the 3rd Gen DOA models.

The 4586 is built like a tank like it's bigger brother, the 4506, so no need to baby it. I have mine setup for 45 Super. It's my 45 Auto SledgeHammer.

The lack of a decocker/safety is an obvious big difference in the DAOs. Some may find it as a positive & others not. For you to decide.

The 4586 shares many of the common use parts as a 4566 would so items like recoil & magazine springs are still readily available.

Any 45 is a good 45. Get it if it's in good shape.

My pair of M4586's are.....

.....Are my go-to autos, if I ever started divesting my auto collection the 4586's would be the last to go. They are fantastic, and while I like all Smith DAO's the 4586's are a joy to shoot, carry a proven round and are built like a tank....

If someone was getting rid of theirs, and I found out about it, and - of course - it was priced right I'd just have to add another to the stable....

Thanks for your help Guys!

I am very appreciative of your input & opinions and after rethinking the situation I have decided to not purchase the said M-4586. The "Double Action Only" function is just not my favorite in a semi-auto.
