Default Any 6906 love out there?

I made a "Couldn't Resist" purchase of an ANIB S&W 6906. I hesitate to call any older S&W pistol unfired, but this one could be. At least since leaving the Mother Ship. This is the first one I've seen for sale - I live Kalifornistan is probably why. The Julian date code on the box puts it in November of 1989.
What's unusual about the gun is it has a squared trigger guard, where all the ones I see online have the rounded one. I'm guessing this is an early gun made from a leftover frame - because the factory doesn't like to waste parts!
Pretty cool gun though.
Forgive the photos, they are taken of my laptop, but you get the idea. I'll post good photos after it serves it's 10 day sentence in gun jail.

The 6906 pistols with the round trigger guard first appeared in the 1991 S&W catalog so I would imagine a fair amount of the squared configuration were made. An unused pistol of that vintage will probably still retain a pre-recall grip. Be on the lookout for the dimple on the bottom of the grip indicating the upgrade.

Yep; best small hi-cap IMHO except for the Performance Center rendition the Shorty-9!

Cheaper than dirt when the Glock 26 came out ....... took advantage of the super cheap prices on guns and mag

Work well with 15rd 59 series mags w/+2 adapters.

I love my 6906 & it gets carried quite often still. Pearce makes a grip extension where you can use a 5900 series 15 round magazine in the 6906.

Congratulations!

The 6906/6904 platform is infinitely more desirable than a Glunk 19.

For sure. I liked my 669/6906, (factory send back,) so much I got a couple more. Well sort of. They fit my hand well and are very accurate.

Agreed that with the +2 adapters they make a lot of sense. Still somewhat compact yet 15 rnds.

Again NOT wanting to be “that guy,” but they are PGS and readily available direct from them. Fair price and nice people.

I like yours a lot - the early hooked trigger guard may make it more challenging to find a good fitting holster but the styling really appeals to me. Bonus that yours has the later Novak rear sight as the first 5906/6906's didn't.

Our last issued S&W autos was the 5904. Plain clothes and senior command were issued the 6904. I got both issued to me. When we went to Glock we could buy our duty guns.
I had the choice of a round or square trigger guard. I got the square as it had just a shade bigger opening which made it easier when wearing light gloves.
I rarely carry it any more. Can't say why, I seem to grab something else.

I would like a 6906 but I don’t think I will ever get one because my 469 is awfully close. Mine is really a very early example based on serial number, as it is A845xxx. Great pistol, accurate shooter and runs like a top.

Default 6906

I got mine at the local cop supply store over 20 years ago. It was a turn in from the Florida Department of Corrections. There are no marks on it indicating this. I removed some scratches with a Scotchbrite pad, which process is described elsewhere on this forum, which also cleaned up the scratches on the grip to my surprise. Mine has the thinned safety/decocker and thinned slide release lever. Recently got it back from Trijicon which repaired the night sights for $58. That took about three weeks all told. Mine is also marked from the factory that it will fire with the magazine removed. I am curious why the FDOC wanted that feature. Mine shoots to point of aim with 147 grain HST rounds. Winchester white box 115 grainers hit low but tight.

This pistol was my introduction into the world of S&W 3rd gens.
Please let us know how it goes when you take her to the range.
Your pictures are fine. Take the laptop to the range and get pictures of the targets? Let us know everything, what rounds what ranges what impressions positive and negative if any.
Congratulations!

Kind regards,
BrianD

Bought one in 1993 as a private purchase duty gun when I went to work for Sate of NH Probation/Parole. Carried for just short of 10 years.

Of the 19 qualification targets 18 were 100s....the one target with one out was all head shots with one pulled just a little low and right that would have been in if it had been a body shot.

Picked up two more along the way but sold them off over the years. Still have the duty gun and sits right here at the computer desk with a 15 round mag and adapter and one extra standard mag.

One thing to be careful of when speed loading using the 15 round mag with adapter is getting the lower palm skin caught between the adapter and the magwell...

Like the Glock 19 is to Glock, probably the best semi that S&W ever made.

I bought one of the early 6906, the very first one I saw many years ago. It's a wonderful pistol. While at a gun show in Columbus, Ohio yesterday I saw two for sale at different tables, didn't examine either one closely. I think one may have had a tag of $600?

For some fun take a 6906 and a 6904 and make yourself some two tone.... my favorite is .....blue slide over sliver!

For more fun you can also take a 5906 or 5904 slide assembly with barrel and have a long slide 6906… or short grip 5906 however you want to call it.

Also works to do short 6906 slide assembly on full grip 5906/5903/5904.

I do like the compact double stack 3rd gen guns such as 6906 and 6904 since they allow a good shootable size gun that also isn’t huge (G19 as someone mentioned earlier). Personally I’m a big fan of DA/SA guns rather than the usual striker fired offerings out there. I like the idea of a long trigger pull and no manual safety for the 1st shot.

Or....... a 69xx frame mated with a 915 upper to get a DA/SA 9mmCCO "Concealed Carry Officers" as they called the Colt Officers Model frame mated to a Commander Slide back in the 80s.

Great set up for IWB carry IMHO!

I've had this one for at least a dozen years. I used to carry it but I switched to some smaller EDCs. But I think about it.....

My 6906 I picked up in 2016. Came with three twelve round magazines and no box, inside was shot little but was beat up on the outside. So I sent back to S&W Performance Shop for a complete make over and came back looking like it came off factory floor. Trigger felt so nice and smooth, and it was such a great job i still need to send my 4506-1 for the same tune up

I love my 6906. Police trade-in at Cabelas, a few years ago. A bit worn, changed springs and cleaned it thoroughly. Trigger is still a bit soft from wear. Changed out the hammer to a 59 style, SA/DA feel didn't change. Prefer to have a thumb-activated SA, if it has a sloppy DA. My 3913 does not have a sloppy DA. I left it alone.

Here are a couple I acquired in 2015. Like a numbnuts, I let one go. Kept the apparent California DOC gun.

6906 BDX s/n - late production?

I probably posted this a couple of years ago when it happened, but I used my new to me 6946 for the South Carolina CWP qualification shoot.

It was only the second time I had fired it since acquiring it, but it did the job.

Their qualification is essentially a police qualification, including timing and drawing from a holster in some stages.

I used either 124 or 147gr rounds as that's what my 3rd Gens seem to like best.

Here's a picture of the finished target.

I'm just the opposite of @nocents. Love my 6906 but EDC has been 3914 for 10+ years. I have 3

Just picked this up today. Swapped even for a 3953. I went with higher capacity. Pretty much carries the same as the 3953. It is a TZR serial # prefix so late 1992 or early 93 maybe. Important marked, Israeli? I know a lot of recent 3rd gen gun have been imported from there. Bit of carry wear but mechanically excellent. Much smoother than the 3953 and I really like the traditional double single action compared to the DAO of the 3953. More like my 5906 and 411. Can't wait to get it to the range after I replace the springs.

It looks like Israel is turning in their 3rd Gens. I was on Gun Broker and noticed that there are a lot of 39xx and 69xx guns for sale.

That includes some 6926 guns, which is interesting. I'm not interested enough to pay for one, but I expect some people here will be.

Among the Third Gen Smiths I've owned over the years I've only had one of the 69 series guns, that being a 6909. It was an early model, like yours, as it had the square trigger guard. Unfortunately, I let it go some years ago leaving me with my 5904 as the only Third Gen in the safe these days. Great guns!

Gary, I agree with you on the prices of 6900 series guns on Gunbroker. Way too much money and no one is bidding on them. I swapped a Glock 43 for the 3953. The Glock was a great gun but because of a hand injury I couldn't shoot it. The 3953 was great but I saw the 6909 and that was that. Even swap. Worked out to about what I had into the Glock and I'm happy.

Bought mine years ago. May have been the first 9mm I ever owned.

Gunny, I currently own 3 stainless gen 3s ( I count my 2206 as a gen3) and a 411. Gotta say I love your 5904. They just look better in black.

I hope that they don't drop the prices on the 6926s, because you know what would happen then!

Scratch built this one at one of my armorer recertification classes in St. Louis, in 1989. Each of the "students" built 8 of the pistols that week. This one has a TDL prefix.

Actually carried it for a while when I was in Crime Scene. One of my favorite S&W 9mm autos. More accurate than the 4" ones I've fired for some reason.

I have a pair of them. That I purchased about 20 years ago. I use to carry one of them as a off duty gun. I think that I paid about $ 325.00 for each one of them. They are really great weapons

Which is why I hope they don't. I don't need it, but I would want it.

You ARE NOT helping. There is a guy near me who has a 3913 Lady Smith for sale. $450.00 with 2 magazines, no box. He has 5 other magazines available.

I'm trying to talk myself out of reaching out to him, but the group of enablers is not helping me.

Besides being lucky enough to have an RSR 6690 and an RSR 6691, I recently acquired this kinda “unique” 669- Roy says the ship date is June ‘85 and it’s clearly a model marked 669 on a Third Generation frame. I’m presuming a factory frame replacement…

Default 6906 love

Bought my second 6906 one about 8 years ago, for "off-duty" carry. The first one I traded for a Beretta 96FS. My current 6906 is in great shape and came with night sights. This is my back up to my Beretta or used for summer carry.

Glad I did the swap at a FFL dealer. The first 6906 was used in an 'Armed Robbery" in New York.
When I was questioned about it. I was able to show, I traded that first 6906 for the Beretta.

I gave them the name of the person who traded with. That was the end for my involvement in this incident.

Mine from this forum, a 3913NL was $450. I think it was a great purchase, but when I got to the range, Wowwwww!

At a funeral, standing near the casket next to the widow, as the people came by saying "He looks so good," "So natural," etc. the widow she whispered to the preacher, "He just had $20,000 worth of dental work done." How do you respond to that comment? I think about that a lot at my age.

GaryS! Get the gun!

Kind Regards Always,
BrianD

Did a deep clean on my 6906 imported purchase and found this... night sights placed in the original iron sights. Deader than Dicks hat band but I was surprised.

Edit to add: Met the seller and the deal was made. As it turns out he's on this forum as well and a "3rd Gen guy." We spent a lot more time chatting about our moves to Texas from other states.

Oh, the gun is in great shape. I'm just going to give it a quick clean, lube, and recoil spring replacement. I'll get it to the range as soon as I can.

I was resisting until he dropped the price to 420 still with two magazines. How can I possibly pass that up for a lady smith?

It's a CAI import. That's marked in small letters on the bottom of the dust cover.

The 3913 and 6900 series always make me look good on the range. I learned the "double tap" waaay back in the revolver days... I just kept doing it with the 3rd Gen semis and shot even better than before!
No matter what super-cool new toy comes from the gun industry, I will never give up my 3G's. Too freakin' awesome!

I field stripped my new to me 3913LS. The previous owner took good care of it and all it needed was a light clean and lube and new recoil spring.

I look forward to getting it to the range.
