Default 5906/5946 aftermarket mags

Does anyone make decent mags for these guns? I’ve seen some floating around but I don’t know which are solid choices or which to avoid. Thanks!

Mec-Gar are excellent as said. They make the OEM mags for several companies also. I think they have even made some of the S&W mags. MidwayUSA had factory 15 round mags in stock a couple of days ago and they seem to come and go, so keep an eye out and you can get factory ones for $35.99.

Pro-mag, USA, TripleK, should be avoided. May be good for range, but not for reliability.

Mec-Gar is a very reliable source. I have their products for other guns and they work perfectly. Also, the finish on the magazines is better than the gun!

Mecgar makes flush fit 17 rounders as well as 15 round. Midway had them in stock when I looked earlier.

Creg Cote LLC is a good source for Mec-gar mags at good prices <$25.

Midway had new S&W 15 rd mags in the $35 range - probably others too. And there were some recent lots of 5946 trade ins that hit the market some with spare used 15 rd mags in $20-25 range as I recall - see recent post on 5946. Personally prefer SW but MecGar has good reputation unlike most other aftermarket manufacturers of 3rd gen mags.

The 17 round mags can also be extended to 19 with Mec-Gar’s base plates. They function perfectly

If you can't get factory S&W magazines, Mec-gar all the way. I have never had any problems with their 5900 series mags, or any other magazines I've used from them. I wish they made 4000, 4500,3900 and every other 3rd gen mags too. Heck, if Mec-gar made toasters I'd buy one!

Agreed factory are still available, and the way to go. Nothing wrong with Mec-gar. I and others would avoid Promag (bad experiences), but some people use Promag and claim they are fine.

Genuine S&W or Mec-Gar, don't mess with the rest unless you want to practice clearing jams.

I have found promag are thin sheet metal and bend instead of flexing. Factory S&W mags as well as MecGar are stiff and rebound back if you try to bend them.

I bought a MecGar witness 45 mag years ago to try to use in my witness 10mm. I beat on the mag lips with a hammer to try to bend them in to work with the 10mm. They just sprang back with every hit. You can't even tell I did anything to it.
