I am considering the purchase of a semi-auto for plinking. I know a place that has both. Both are 6" and in great shape. 422 has wood stocks and original box for $400 OTD. 2206 black plastic stocks, gun only $600 OTD. Your opinions of desirability, reliability, and value would be appreciated.

yes.. my answer would be yes...

The heavier version will compensate for any felt recoil unless you are able to obtain for less, good luck.

For $200 you can buy an awful lot of .22 ammo. Just sayin

2206's have a spotty reputation for reliability. I think I have read about 4% have issues. It is heavier than the 422 due to the stainless steel frame. Some came with adjustable sights, some with fixed sights. I think either are useable. I have not heard of any issues with 422's.

That being said I bought an adjustable sighted 6" 2206 from a forum member and have had no issues whatsoever. I found some wood grips on an auction site that look good.

They are great suppressor hosts due to an easily replaced barrel nut and a low bore access that lets one use the original sights.

Offer $800 for both OTD... never can have too many 22LR...

I have had two M422s. Both were very accurate. Only sold them because I needed money.

Go with the M422 and spend the rest on ammo.

Neither! IMHO in that price range I'd get a Ruger Mark 4 target pistol in Blue for $525. I'd also get a Voquartsen trigger kit ($125). On the stock Ruger you will hate the horrible trigger! With the Volquartsen trigger kit, you get a Model 41 type trigger!

The 422 series is more of a plinker and for only a hundred bucks more you will have a high quality Target gun without spending $2,000 on a M41.

Up until about a year ago I would never buy any Ruger! When 3 of my friends bought multiple Rugers (Mark 4's and 380 LCP Max's, that changed my mind. I still don't own a Ruger however if I didn't already have my 1979 vintage M41, that is what I'd buy today!

Yes, I know this is a S&W sight but they are just not as good as the Mark 4 WITH the Volquartsen trigger kit! That (in my mind) is the plain truth - as sad as it might be.

I would also lean toward the 422 if it has the adjustable rear sight. The number of magazines might also factor in, they both use the same one as the model 41.

A Ruger Mark II is a better pistol than the Mark IV. Folks that demand red dot sights will argue.

I have a 422 and a 2206. For many years I’d wanted a 2206. I got it first, probably 5-6 years ago and I added the 422 just last year. Both are 6-inch barrel.

The weight difference is astonishing, maybe it’s just me but these pistols feel totally different. I truly think it depends on —WHO— will be shooting it.

If it’s only you and you love a heavy, substantial pistol, you will like the 2206. If it’s going to be a field gun or you are going to have lots of young kids enjoy it, the 422 will be much more appreciated.

A younger version of me would NEVER willingly purchase an aluminum frame pistol if a steel frame version of the same model exists. But this is a .22cal rimfire and it’s not going to wear out.

I never would have guessed this, but I think I like my 422 more than my 2206.

I’m partial to the 422, 4” Target Version. It is a little more harder to shoot well for one use to full size heavy pistols. There is nothing close to it in size that shoots as well. Light, flat and accurate.

The finish on the 422 series is not very durable. There are several sharp edges on these guns that show wear quickly if holstered often.

I agree with chief38, price wise I wouldn't buy either, unless you are just determined to have one of these models of pistols. IMO there are other better options for similar money. If you are determined to own of of these models of pistols the 2206 would get the nod for me for sure. I previously owned a 2206 with adjustable sights and never had a problem in function at all.

Given the choices that you give, I would go for the 2206. In the real world, if a Model 41 were out of the question, I would find a used 22S. Great plinker.

The 422 is close to the right price based on what I see sell on GB. The 2206 is WAY high. No box that should be a ~$400 gun IMO.
