Spec. Ord. Question ….
So I’m looking at the S&W factory blue box for a model 1066 with the following codes:
Prod. Code 105500, Spec Ord. 0103.
Does anybody know if these codes have any significance above and beyond the codes on a “regular” production M1066?

The Spec "Ord Code" at that time was Julian date code.
The 1066 was offered from 1990-'92, so code 0103 represents the 103'rd day in 1990.

I would like to hear some opinions on when and/or why S&W has occasionally chosen to use the Spec. Ord. code for a purpose other than julian date.
They surely have in the past, usually for different odd runs, specials, etc.
Unfortunately, I can't think of a specific example right this moment, but it definitely exists.

Yes, and that’s why I was asking.
I think I recall S&W using the Spec. Order code for certain L.E. model 3rd Gen guns that were ordered by the Dept. or Agency with “non-regular” modifications, like maybe removal of the mag-disconnect, a special type of finish, or special markings or stampings, or other deletions or additions that depart from what would otherwise be a standard model.

Here's one example I could think of (and find) quickly.
I can think of (and go look for) many, many others but you are correct, it wasn't a Julian date when it actually was a Spec Ord(er) and usually they could not be mistaken for a date.

Almost always, when the SPEC ORD number is not the Julian date, the FEATURES heading has the word "SPECIAL" there
