The ejector/mag disconnector broke after my last range trip with it. Dropped off at FedEx today. Now we will see how long it takes to get it back. I will keep you guys updated.

Good to know they might still work on the 3rd Gen guns. I thought they stopped that a few years ago.

I can also, but figured I would let them pay the dime. They also said it was a "factory installed" part, so they wouldn't just send it to me.

I have sent in a few 3rd gen guns in the last few years for various things to be done. Sent in like 3 about 3 years ago to have the trigger play springs replaced. I now do it myself, figured it isn't worth the trip anymore.

Don't misundertake me!

I wasn't attempting to cast aspersions on your abilities, I was poking a little fun at S&W...

As you know, the "Ejector & Magazine Depressor" is NOT a fitted part and is neither "Restricted to factory trained armourers" (S&W's spelling of "armorers") nor "Factory installed only".

So the unfamiliarity of some of their CS folks with the old 3rd gens is unsurprising as many have discovered.

Your old 4516-1 probably had the old ejector with the sharp angle beneath the nose that often lead to failure.

I'm sure they will replace it with the new style.

Good for them in taking the initiative to call for the pistol and agree to put somebody on it.

I just hope it's not Hillary...

I knew you was poking fun and didn't take it any other way.

Even though they said they no longer have any of the post-recall grips, I did add that to the note that if they can find one, I would appreciate it. Will see what the smith returns.

You have a picture of an old one vs new? Is there enough metal there to round off the sharp edge?

I did order a couple spares that was available on Midway, but still unsure if they use the same in all new replacements, or if they are gun specific. I get different info depending where I look on which models they fit.

Sorry, I don't have a picture.

The S&W p/n for the ejector that fits all of the large frame models (10mm; 45acp) is 230190000.

I searched Midway and could not find a listing for them.

As you might expect, the new style has a gentle radius below the nose and the old style has a sharp right angle.

Regarding filing a radius into an old style ejector, I don't think there is enough material there to round without cutting into the nose and weakening it.

When your 4516-1 returns, it'll probably have a black ejector (later production), and look like one of the ones in the bottom row of this pic. The ones in the top row are the original old production 3rd gen parts, with the sharp angled cut on the bottom of the ejector tip. Yes, there is a remaining stainless ejector among the ones in the bottom row.



Closer pic of the differences in the older and newer production #23019 ejectors, showing the subtle curved angle introduced to mitigate a stress riser on the bottom of the tip.


The newer ejectors (late 90's, as I recall) came with a slightly longer tip, for faster ejection (especially with hotter duty rounds we were told), as well as the curved cut under the rear of the tip to mitigate a stress riser.

There was another variation, for specific late production models, which had the same overall length tip as the revised ejector, but the bottom was cut back with more clearance. It's listed for the CS9 and 4013TSW, but not the CS45, 4513TSW, 3913 or 4040PD, for example.

It's the stainless one still inside the plastic.


Since my last Parts List update is now more than 10 years old, and the guns are considered obsolete ... and it wasn't uncommon for me to be given different part numbers and/or revisions not listed in the Parts Lists when I'd call for a part, even when they were still current production guns ... I'd check the ejector in the gun to the new part, to make sure they match regarding the length of the clearance cut on the bottom. For example, my CS9 & CS45 ejectors have different clearance cuts on the ejectors, so I have spare ones for each. Ditto

Since all the people I knew at the factory who worked on/with 3rd gen guns are either retired or passed, my sources of info have fallen by the wayside.

I remember when I used to have to call and double check when ordering a new part, and occasionally found out the part number had changed just due to a change in finish.

Then, there was a time when I called about an extractor fitting question for an older 6906. The repair tech suggested I try a special extractor they kept aside for the 909. The 909 extractor was the same part number as for the 908 (and other 9's) in my parts list. He just chuckled, and said it wasn't listed in the commercial parts list, but was something they kept in-house, and the difference was that the hook reach was different than the regular extractor. Never say never with those folks.

A secretary might be able to replace it, but they need to have the part on hand to have the secretary do it, and I recall a post on here years ago that I participated in that said they weren’t supporting the guns anymore since they had no parts.

My 4516 was just returned today, not a bad turn around. New ejector. 24 days including weekends (16 business days), not bad at all.

Fedex person didn't knock on door or ring door bell, just dropped it on step. 1st time I have ever had them leave a gun without a signature. Oh well.

People have been saying that for a few years, but I think it's more accurate to say that they can do some repairs based on parts availability. The big not available part is frames and for some models it's grips and other assorted parts.

Yeah, the fedex bunch here has been late a lot the last year or so, like a week or more where it says out for delivery multiple days before it gets here. Now if it says "operational delay", I just drive over to the depot and ask for it. I did find out last time that the problem was it was loaded on the wrong truck by the warehouse, not drivers fault. Have gotten several packages that way. I figured I would have to do this with the gun, but I didn't. She was a ninja driver, slipped up and left on porch and I didn't even hear the truck.

Never Say Never when it comes to S&W. Probably had some stamped plain stainless ejectors at hand. When I was still ordering spare parts it was always a toss-up whether I'd get plain stainless or black parts in the mail. Once they started making blackened stainless (for the 2-tone contrast and appearance in some of the TSW's, we were told), we never knew what to expect. Especially for the MIM parts, since all the MIM was stainless, but could get a black finish after coming out of the mold. (Think manual safety bodies and slide stop lever assemblies.)
