Default Finally found one 4506-1

So been looking for a while, lost out one a few. I happened to stop in LGS I don't frequent enough! Sales asks what I'm looking for, I state 3rd Generation Smith. He brings this out of the back and its mine. Now the story with the mags is I purchased a while back hoping to find the gun to go with them. Sometimes it works out. Mag functioned fine in gun, 100rds down the range. Different looking mags with the thick rubber on base ??? Any thoughts on mags?4506 mag plate.jpg

Great design and fun for veterans and rookies to shoot. It was my "1911" for a lot of years. Care for it, shoot it safely and enjoy!

Nice early, (flash chromed parts,) fixed Novak sight in really great shape. I’ve got a sentimental attachment to mine but I won’t repeat all the reasons. Again.

It’s amazing that after all these years there is still an interest in them. I’m sure you will continue to appreciate it. Your only regret will be not getting one sooner.

I have a couple of magazines with the rubber base pad. Mine were in well used condition and the rubber was beginning to peel from the base plate, so I removed the rubber and adhesive residue from the metal base plate. These magazines must have been the last of the metal base plate magazines made for the Model 645 and I don't know if any 4506's actually shipped with this magazine. One nice thing about the 645 and 4506 is that the magazines are interchangeable.

That would be a no-dash 4506, the first version of the 4506 production run.

I have two of the old metal base plate magazines without the rubber pad. Had three but one cracked near the top.

What I found out is if you insert the mag quickly one might push the release button. Then the plate, spring and all the rounds fall to the floor.

After I had this happen I knew to be a bit more careful when inserting the magazine.

That piece of rubber needs to be there. It helps to avoid an unitended mag dump in the wrong direction.

Even worse for the floor plate mag dump was the first version of the 645 magazine, which used a small tab on the base plate that engaged a small cut in the bottom of the magazine body. These magazines are also the ones with the metal follower.
