I just purchased my first semi-auto. It's a mod. 669. great lookin gun. cleaned up like new. But, the trigger guard is rounded and it has a 1 piece grip. all of the other 2nd gens i have seen have a 3 piece grip w/ a square trig. guard.
Just wondering if some of you guys can provide me with some info on what exactly i have here

In the Standard Catalog of S&W it mentions the RSR Transitionals Models which includes 6600's.
Check pages 318 & 319.
Some 2nd Gen Frames where used with 3rd gen
components to build 3rd gen pistols.
These are very scarce & rare and can be worth
between $600-$1000 to a collector.
The frame# could be stamped 669 but in actuality could be a model 6690 or 6691.
The grip on your 669 is a 3rd gen grip like
on a 6906.
You can contact S&W to obtain more info possibly
with your serial#.

I was lucky enough to pick up a Smith “transitional” pistol. It is a S&W 6450 and I bought back in 1992. It was built during the transition between the 3 digit 2nd generation pistols and the 4 digit 3rd generation pistols.
The frame is identical to the 4506 and it was built with a leftover slide from the 645. Hence the 6450 designation. It looks almost identical to a 4506 and was about half the price of a new 4506. Mine was used but it was in outstanding condition and came with 3 magazines and a box (unfortunately it had a different serial number on it otherwise it would probably have some nice collector value).
I also learned (mostly from the serial number and a little from internet research) that this was a special run for RSR Distributors and the serial number on my pistol is RSR-002*.
The pistol shoots like a dream and I think I'll be keeping it.

The holster will fit either gun since the frames are the same. Just make sure you order a holster that will accomodate a square trigger guard. Most listings will indicate whether or not they have the holster for the square trigger guard. I have a 669 and 6906 and they fit the same holster.

Check your model number carefully. I have a 6690 and the added 0 is stamped much lighter than the 669. It would be easy to miss if you do not look closely.

Seems to me that a true transitonal 669-6906 would have a squared trigger guard.

it is a rounded trig guard. it looks identical to the 6906 fram w/ a 669 slide and sights. i have checked the mod. number very closely. no hint or even and indication of a 0 attached at the end.

I have read posts here on S&W Forum that indicated that the 669 was prone to frame breakage with heavy use of +p ammo, or in pistols with high round counts. I suspect that your pistol began life with a true 669 frame of 1980's vinatge, was somehow damaged and returned to S&W for repair, and as a result the factory used a 6906 frame of much more recent manufacture to accomplish such a refurbishment. If it was indeed a repair they would have stamped the original 669 serial & model numbers on it so as to be able to ship it back to the owner, without incurring any complications with the BATF. Just a theory, but I doubt it's a "transitional" as it would have a squared triggerguard like the S&W autos from the lates 80's..
