I recently purchased a Model 459 with a matte aluminum frame and a stainless steel slide. I cannot find anything about this piece in the Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson. The auction site where I purchased this gun says it is a model 4590. I can't find anything about that model number either. Does anyone have any information on this piece?

It's an EARLY 5903, before there was a Model 5903. SCS&W says they were for the Georgia Highway Patrol but I know of at least one that went to the Texas DPS.
I suspect it's stamped as a 459 because that was the only full sized alloy framed pistol at the time and 4590 is on the label because they were into the 3rd gen, 4 digit model numbers then.
You'll notice it has "C" for finish instead of "S" like the 5906 and 6906.
...have you noticed the trigger yet or do you have any other S&W pistols to compare it to?

459 Confusion

This is my 459 which is almost identical to my 59 which are both blued full size versions and my 459 has the rear sight protectors. I have pics of both. The stainless is 559 and 569 as noted in the luckygunner SW Quick ref chart

There were a small number of transitional pistols between Gen 2 and Gen 3 and they had four-digit model numbers. If I recall, they were shipped to RSR, a Smith & Wesson distributor. It looks like the box shows the Model number as 4590, while the pistol is marked 459, unless I am reading it wrong, which is possible. I would certainly letter it.

Given that it has all the features of the 3rd gen S&W 9mm pistols, but bears a 2nd gen 3-digit model number, and is stainless steel with a silver-gray anodized receiver, I'd say it is one of the early production 5903's that were listed as Model 4590.

Could it be someone fitted a 5906 slide to a 459 frame??

Rosewood

Is the right side safety screwed on or using the slide and pin of the 3rd gens?
