Yesterday I saw a Fresno Sheriff trade in, and it got me to thinking...does anyone collect L.E. labeled guns?

I'm scared I may have discovered a new passion...this is going to cost me. It turns out there is A LOT of them!

I don't collect them specifically because they are LEO marked , its just thats where all the good condition/recondition S&Ws are coming from now .
 
I think MorTech hit it on the nail. Those of us that got started in the Smith "auto" club late, these police trade in's are giving us an opportunity to pick up some good used models.

Another advantage of some of these trade-ins is that a good percentage of police officer's are not gun enthusist's to spend alot of shooting with their service guns other than qualifying requirements. Back in my first life as a police officer I found this was the case ( I jumped ship and went fire).

I'm looking at my first police trade in, an Atlanta PD 4003 to go with my recently acquired 4006. The one at my local gun shop looks really clean.
 
Watch out... those 4506-1 Fresno guns are evil. That was what I started out with, had no intentions of getting into LE marked guns as a collecting interest, just thought it would be a kick to have it.

Then along came an LE marked 4006... then a M586... then a M66. The LE marked 586 is the only one I had been specifically looking for, it's from a local transit agency that's a unique variation of the 586.

So I guess I play both sides of the street... I buy for price and/or interesting LE markings.

I picked up this police trade-in Model 15 for a decent price in 1999. Nothing terribly fancy, but I have always admired the look and balance of the 4-inch Model 15.

Still tight and an accurate shooter.
 
Nice model 15! As of Saturday, I'm up to one revolver. Never had more than one at a time. Now I have the bug...desperately need a blued one with a square butt. Or maybe a Ruger Vaquero. Or maybe both.

Ah geez, it's happening again!

Sorry about being in Kalifornia. I spent half my life there, but I can't go back now because I'd have to get rid of all of my evil black rifles and my high-cap pistols.
 
Mine is a little worn from years of service but I got a good deal. The only reason I got it was because of the stamp. Here are some pictures.

There's a real doughnut holder there. 4" barrel should hold 2 glazed.
 
This looks like something I might want to get into. Are these guns available only from dealers?
 
Just ordered a set of 4006's today like car-15's. I will not list them all- not enough space- My favorite is a 65-3, 3"bbl, matte SS, pachmayr, NIB. Marked Wayne county Sheriff. I am always looking LE/Corrections preferably hand guns (snubs) but I seem to be unable to say NO! The history of some is tremendous, while others are just plain COOL!!!

Check out kull and supica firearm auctions- they are listing a KC registered magnum for their NOV auction.
 
I have bought several police trade-ins in the past and never bought one that was not a very good gun. I still have some of them.
 
Awesome 586, love the grips. What was the unique variation? I have heard of 586 chambered in 38 special for export.
 
I've purchased two police trade in's one was a Ruger P93 that was used but well taken care of and the second was my S&W M&P 45, it was new and assume it was over stock. Both pistols came with night sights and three hi cap mags at a price below dealer value. I paid my way through college working as a police officer and have always assumed I had the best and we took great care of of our sidearms. Think it would be hard to find a poor police trade in.
