Is there anything special to do for target pistols, such as the Model 41 or 952? Besides for regular cleaning, shooting, changing the recoil spring when needed? How many rounds do people go through before needing a trip back to the factory for a tune up or other care?

Or do they just run like the Energizer Bunny?

I can only speak on the model 41 from experience. If you follow S&W's recommendation to use standard velocity ammo; then twenty to fifty thousand rounds, depending on the routine maintenance. In other words, keep it clean and it will never go back to the factory. For some unknown reason, some people use high velocity ammo. For target shooting, it makes no sense.

Yeah, I saw so many posts about that, I bit the bullet (so to speak) and bought myself some CCI Standard Velocity.

Has anyone used the Aguila or other brands of standard velocity? Does it have to be CCI, or as long as its Standard is it ok?

A couple of years ago I picked up 5 bricks of Aguila Match Pistol at a good price that my 41 liked. Ran out of them and am now feeding it CCI Standard Velocity which run thru it fine.

I was curious about the need for service for my target quality guns. I've got the 41, a 52-2, 952-1 and an 845. Called S&W and talked w/a fellow in the Perf Ctr. I asked him at what approximate round count I should look to have these serviced. He kind of chuckled told me to keep them clean & lubed and said they need service when they start acting up which would be a while yet, in the mean time enjoy them.

Aguila SE 40 Gr. Standard Velocity is an excellent target ammo. It's not "match" quality, but very usable for club match's. It will hold the x ring if you can hold it. .22 RF's are finicky about ammo, and two identical 41's may not like the same ammo. Try several brands of Standard Vel. and see which one your gun likes the best.
