I have a chance to buy one. Any opinions or knocks on this model? It is in new condition.

I should have been more specific, it's a TSW model. does that change things?

I like it even more...

I'd sell blood if necessary to buy it if I were you...

I don't know what condition the trigger adjustment is in, but a heavy trigger on a DAO Smith can be fixed in a heartbeat.

I can't think of a handgun I'd rather have -- except a 1053 -- which was never made.

I saw one for sael a month or so ago.

It looked really nice, but the chopped grip on this model was a deal killer for me...

All 4553's are TSW models. The first run had a chopped grip and no accessory rail. The later runs had a 4516 size grip and the rail under the dust cover.

If it has no rail, then it probably has the chopped grip. These take special 6 round magazines. Make sure it fits your hand before purchasing.

Outrider, maybe I can keep you from having to maul someone if you are interested in a 4553TSW with 6 rd mags.

I don't see an email address in your profile.

I'm thinning out my S&W collection to cover some overpriced 1911's I just have to have. If you want to discuss a possible deal, drop me an email... in my profile.

You guys just threw me a curve ball.

I need to find out more about the "chopped grip". This is new to me -- and I'm not sure I like it.

A removable accessory rail was also a big attraction...

Clearly, several things demand my attention -- personally -- on this before I'd make a purchase...

My understanding of this pistol is it's double action only -- and made of alloy, correct?

Will all S&W .45 mags fit it?

My intent was to carry a 4500 series large or medium frame -- and the 4553 as a backup -- with a 640 or 340 as deep concealment.

It looks as if I need to do some more checking before I commit to anything...

Alloy frame, no rail, double action only, shorter butt for easier concealment, takes a six round mag. "Chopped" grip in relation to 4516 etc which take a seven round mag.

I imagine the full size mag would fit but stick out below end of butt.

These are sweet little concealment guns. Get me an email address and I will be glad to send you some pics.

This sounded as though you'd had your heart set on a 4553 and had been looking for one for years...

Here's a link to a picture in an active auction - I have no relationship with the seller.

Spades,

What is the seller asking for the pistol?

I did some further checking, and I've seen them priced all the way up to $1,250...

That's way, way too much -- in any condition -- for my wallet...

Below $500 is a great price...

I'd pounce...

The more I checked, the more I realized I can live without the rail on this gun...

No pounce for NJ residents! Takes about three months to obtain a "Permit to Purchase" so I may have it by Christmas!

I was at Ray's earlier this evening. They had at least four of the early 4553's. They are dealer samples and all were under $500.

I'd have to move to another state...

If it's not illegal, I'd have to arrange for the shop to send it to another shop to a close-by gun-friendly state, have a friend buy it, let him keep and shoot it long enough to get under the "primary purchaser" provisions (say, a month), then have a private sale back to me.

Nice try, don't it won't work. ALL handguns sales MUST go through FFL with the purchaser providing a "Permit to Purchase. Every handgun, every time!

You can't buy one out of state in a private purchase -- and then bring it home?

I believe I'd challenge that provision in court.

You need a Permit for each handgun, but the transfer does not have to go thru an FFL if the seller is also a resident of NJ. Just fill in section A on the bottom of the permit, instead of section B.

Outrider,

It is Federal law that requires all handgun transfers to occur within your state of residence, following whatever state requirements are in effect at that time.
