Default 908 Any Thoughts

I ran across a 908 for a good price and it has me thinking. It looks unfired for $309.00. I really don't have a "need" it, I have a Sig 239 which is very similar in size and weight, but I've always liked single stacks.

Any thoughts and experiences welcomed.

I'd go for it. For that amount of money, you wouldn't mind if it got a little worn or nicked up. You could keep it in your car, tool box, whatever.

Sigs are expensive. I have a P239 too. I'd be a little upset if I let it get nicked up.

I have a FireStar that I don't worry about. It's ugly, but reasonably reliable; and fairly beat up, now.

I consider the 908 a vastly superior piece of engineering. For one thing, you can easily get parts and magazines for it. You can send it to S&W, if it needs work.

It's not a collector item, but they are good solid pistols, and that's a good price. Break it in, and it should be every bit as reliable as your P239.

You may find you prefer to carry the 908. Holster wear? So what.

I had a 908 myself, which has since been traded away. However, I feel the same regarding it quality and durability. Nice little gun for CC (again who cares about holster wear) or throw it the glove box, under the seat, etc. I wouldn't do that with the 239 SigSauer.

Disgusting butt ugly gun with a bunch of cheap plastic parts.

However, mine goes bang every time I pull the trigger, hits as close to the target as my aged eyes allow and gets exposed to salt water and game blood without a lot of worry on my part.

309 is a good price.

The 908 is the economy version of the 3913. It's a solid, reliable gun; just not up the the fit and finish of other more expensive models. If you can get it for $309, I'd snap it up. If you don't like it, I'm sure you can get your money back on re-sale.

At that price you mention, the 908 IS a Value pistol.

The "economy" version of the 3913. I would take a 908 over an M&P9C anyday. Good luck with your decision! Regards 18DAI.

I prefer the 3913, but the 908 is still a good gun. If you do buy it and decide to sell it later I'm sure someone around here will gladly take it off your hands.

Default I have two S&W #908's

That is way too much money. I paid $225.00 for the one on the left and $25.00 for the one on the right. GREAT guns, you will love it.

Saw 2 for sale at the last gun show a month ago. $400 for one and $425 for the other. Both had been carried enough that they were showing obvious wear. The dealers probably would have dickered on the price some but I doubt either would do $309. Go for it.

Default 908 Recoil Guide Rod Replacement

I just picked up a new 908.

Looking at a S&W retail parts list, I noticed that the Model 908 and Model 3913 use the exact same recoil spring (same part #).

But the recoil guide rods are different. The 908 is plastic and the 3913 has a metal guide rod.

I suspect that the 3913 metal recoil guide rod will fit & function in my 908.

Will it improve performance or improve reliability?

Default I have a 908

In fact, I'm keeping it warm right now. I wouldn't turn my nose up at another one. It's been 100% reliable. Feeds, fires and ejects everything. "Value" or not this has been a fantastic pistol for me. I'm even on the look out for its big brother, the 457. "Value" means plastic sights, plastic guide rod, plastic mag release button, but I've yet to see any of these parts fail under normal usage.

I too am under the assumption that the metal guide rod from the 3913 would work in the 908 though I've never tried it. IIRC, the magazines are identical too. If I were in your shoes, I'd buy it.

I had a S&W 908. Very nice gun. Shared magazines with my 3913. Then, the inevitable happened. I sold it for 300 bucks, and mine definitely had been fired several times (with no issues).

In return, I picked up a 3913 Ladysmith for 100 bucks more.

It's a good gun. If you want something inexpensive, reliable, compact, and supported by a manufacturer, grab it. 309 is a good price.

I bought a LNIB 908 for $279 + tax probably a year or more ago. $309 sounds like a good price to me. If I had it to spare, (I don't) I would buy it immediately to have a pair of them.

I am confident that I have read on this forum that the guide rods are interchangeable. I have not experienced any issues with the std. plastic one and have not replaced it in mine.
