Default post your target

Next time you go to the range, take a pic of the target and the pistol you used and post it in this thread. I think it would be very interesting to see what models product what results.

Dont forget to include distance (lets say between 10 - 20 yards), load used, model pistol, number of rounds, and anything else that might be of interest. Have fun.

Default Not a semi-auto Model 36 new to me

Here are the first range results with my 36-7. I used my reloads 38spl 4.5 grains of W231, 158 grain LSWC, and Remington 1 1/2 primer. Total of 20 shots fired at 4 targets 10 yards. The guy I bought the 36 from told me the gun was inaccurate.

M&P40 All groups are 5 shots at 7 yards unsupported slow fire. I've tested a lot of SD loads with this gun. The last two images are labeled with the ammunition used.

The first photo shows the first time I used the .357 Sig barrel. Left and center are .357 SIG WWB and upper right is .40 Golden Saber. The .357 group is the smallest I have ever shot with this pistol and measures .585" CTC. (the .40 shoots to point of aim while the .357 is approx. 1 1/2" low at 7 yards)

These measurements are CTC and approx. using a ruler.

This gun is the most frustrating for me as I shoot everything else I have (A couple .45 autos and a couple .357 revolvers) considerably more accurate! The trigger is a big part of my issue as it is the heaviest of any I have ever used and once it breaks I get a noticeable jerk when the trigger comes to a stop...very frustrating for shooting at paper! I do know that this gun was not intended for bullseye shooting but still...

Those are some pretty good groups markush, especially from an M&P.

Two things I dislike most about the M&P are it's trigger, and lack of accuracy.

The M&P fans say that the trigger breaks in after a few hundred rounds if thats any consolation to you. Good luck! Regards 18DAI.

My girls and I usually shoot on steel. Our plates are about 12" wide by 18" high. We put one up around 15 yards, three at 25 and one at 50 and 100 yards. My youngest (10) shoots only at 25. My 13 year old at 25 and 50. We repaint before each trip. The targets at 25 and 50 are the ones that need repainting. Next trip out I will get some pictures.

Mark: It appears that the black portion of your targets are 2 inches across, is that correct? If so, it's hilarious that you would be dissatisfied with that. If only you could see the shooters at the indoor range I go to weekly. I am usually the only one who dares to shoot at a target more than 25 feet. Most of the shooters are at 15 or closer and their targets look like they were blind folded. Well at least their there trying to learn handgun shooting. I am asked regularly to help people who have no ideal about grip, stance, or trigger control. I am glad to do it, but wonder how some went through NRA instructed classes and not know how to at least hold the weapon properly. I have been going to this range over two years and have yet to see anyone who can shoot 25 yd. free hand with any kind of grouping. I can't do it because, first you have to be able to see the target.

Ammo makes a difference. This is the PPS with different types of ammo at about 10 yards outdoors, rapid fire:

Win 147 on the left; Win 115 on the right

And then with Gold Dot 124 gr HP and Gold Dot HP Short Barrel +P

Default 38 Special Kind of Day

Took 6 different .38 specials to the range this afternoon. Couple of favorites and a few that don't get out much. Could also call it a S&W vs Colt kind of Day but I don't generally think that way. Enjoy them both and appreciate the differences that make them unique.

I choose three each S&W's and Colt's that I thought were pretty well matched.

Officer's Model Match & K-38
Metropolitan & Model 10-6 HB
Detective Special & 36-1

All were shot with a standing, unsupported, two-hand hold and single action only. 25 rounds into each target.

1st up were the OMM & K38. Both 6 inch barrels.

Targets shot at 15 yards. Groups are remarkable similar. These are two of my favorite .38's and frequently go to the range. In fairness to the K38, it was first gun, first target. Had a couple of flyers where I had a muscle twitch just as the trigger broke. Things improved after the first cylinder.

Ammo used was 148 grain DEWC with 3.3 grains of W231

2nd up was the Metropolitan & the Heavy barrel 10-6. Both 4 inch barrels.

Targets also shot at 15 yards. Again the groups proved remarkable similar maybe with a slight edge to the 10-6. Both guns very comfortable to shoot but the fixed combat sights don't lend themselves to the best possible accuracy with my tired, old eyes.

Ammo used was 158 LSWC with 4.2 grains of W231

I actually had to do this target over. Initially used a 158 grain RNL over 4.5 W231 load that had in the past worked quite well with other .38's. The Metro did OK but the 10-6 couldn't put 1 out of 6 rounds in the black. Don't know why as this load performs well in other guns.

Last up was the Detective Special and the 36-1. Both with 3" barrels.

For these guns, I moved up to the 7 yard line. I have a hard time getting a proper grip on the little J-frame with standard service stocks. First 5 rounds were a little squirrelly until I found the right grip and trigger finger position. The next 20 rounds went through a single thumbprint size hole. The Colt with the larger stocks and Tyler grip adapter was a much better hand fit. However, the Colt shot two distinct high/low groups that in the end merged. Don't think it's the gun but rather my shooting this day. Despite feeling better in the hand, the Colt "bites" on recoil worse than the Smith. Seems to be something about the trigger/trigger guard shape or maybe the hand position due to the Tyler grip adaptor. Think I was flinching a bit by now and may be why I got the larger, oval shaped grouping.

Ammo was also the 158 grain LSWC with 4.2 grains of W231

All in all and enjoyable afternoon. Not my best shooting but pretty good day for me. I found it interesting how similar both pairs performed. Will have to try it again soon. Might be able to do something similar with .357's.

Since I started this I felt I should also post my results.

I have heard the 5906 is not very accurate, this is approx. 10 yards and 30 rounds of 124 grain FMJ. (sorry about the top right hand flyer....it was of course the last round )

Hmm

Here is my 6906 @ 50ft rapid fire. PMC 115gr FMJ 9mm. It's a little loose in rock&roll mode. Slow fire is no contest.

Ran across my target from when I took my CWP course. 50 rnds
Glock 24. The instructor said bring your best shooter. And this was it at the time. I still have it but best shooter title belongs to my 945 now.
