There is already a thread going for SD owners to chime in, but I have a specific concern so I am starting this separate thread. (I did post in that one as well.)

Does your SD9 "rattle" ? And no, I am not talking about the magazine. In fact, I don't even have the magazine in the pistol when I notice the rattling. The slide fits very loosely on the frame...with the magazine out, and the slide in battery, I can grip the pistol and shake it, and it rattles. I can move the slide back and forth slightly, and from side to side slightly with my hand. It just seems very loose, and I've never noticed this with any other polymer pistol I've owned.

It is new, brand new. I just bought it tonight, and I haven't fired it. I didn't check it as carefully as I should have at the store (Academy Sports) but I noticed it immediately when I got home and was unloading the box (which is now cardboard, BTW.)

Does yours do this? I handled a SD9 about a year ago, and I don't remember it being like this!

I know my HiPoint C9 has about 1/8 inch of play between the slide and frame and I have well over 1500 rounds through it. So it doesnt mean the gun will fail. That being said I paid $100 for my HiPoint id expect a little more for S&W though.

Just shoot it. Look at the AK-47, it rattles like a maraca but it handles business when need it to every time.

:D :D

It's not quite THAT bad...and it seems less so this morning than it did last night. Maybe it was just nervous and needed to settle into its new home? :)

my 5906 has a little wiggle room in the slide, but I've seen this mentioned in other threads and sounds like it's common, and general consensus seems that it's not an issue. My 5906 cycles amazingly well with all types of ammo, and its accuracy is consistent. I hear the 10 series shares this trait as well, and they are described as "scary-accurate," like "shoot-a-smiley-face-in-the-target-accurate" :D

also if I recall correctly, the older (circa WW2) 1911s, had some intentional wiggle room to increase reliability when dirty in battle.

when i went up to the S&W factory ..i was told that the "famous rattle" of the SD and some of the M&P,sigma was do the the 4 pice steel frame rails, not to worry all "GOOD QUALITY" gun have some "rattle......my $1100.00 kimber custom carry has a rattle

I wouldn't doubt it. I love the SD, it is my favorite pistol I've ever owned. The slide rattle that alot of the guys hate doesn't bother me...but the mags loaded to more than 8 are just awful. Smack em all different ways, but as soon as the mag seats- clackety clack. Sigma mags in the SD are FTW!

OP let us know how much you love it as soon as you go shooting...I'm sure you will.

Well, I've owned a number of polymer pistols, including M&Ps, XDs and XDms, Rugers, and Glocks...and none of them rattled like this. My Sigma was not this loose. None of my 1911s are this loose either.

On an interesting note, I've loaded both mags and so far, THEY don't seem to rattle! Ha!

I'm not going to worry about it, since it seems to be common. I'm just going to shoot it and enjoy it. It fits my hand so well, and you can hardly beat the capacity...all in all, it seems like it's going to be a great gun to have. The proof will be at the range!

Look on the factory fired shell casing envelope and tell me what date it is? I'm thinking they may have fixed the rattling magazine issue after the first few batches went out

It was March 2011.

Maybe so...I loaded them both to 15 rounds (will let them sit for a bit before I put 16 in) and shook them by hand, and didn't hear any rattle. I put them in the pistol, and didn't hear them rattle (the only rattle was from the slide.)

I haven't fired it yet, so we'll see what happens then.

I'm wondering if it isn't the rounds in the magazine, but the magazine itself rattling against the frame? I notice that there is some play in the magazine at the well, when it is inserted and locked into place. It doesn't seem to rattle on mine, even with the amount of play it has...but maybe when the mag is fully loaded on some pistols, the weight makes the rattle more noticeable?

I dunno...as I said, my mags don't seem to rattle. When I insert the loaded mags into the pistol, there is no more rattle than there was from the slide rattling when the pistol is empty (no mag inserted.)

My SD9 mags don't rattle, nor do my Sigma 9 mags rattle. Actually the SD and Sigma mag tubes, followers and springs appear to be identical, the only difference appears to be the floor plates.

Yeah I always thought it was the magazine parts rattling not the rounds themselves. Mine and the other people I know who have mag rattle- our guns were made in summer of 2010

New to the SD9 myself but no mag rattle and the slide does slightly but no more than my Glocks do and they are flawless on the range. For a $400 gun your not going to get a hand fitted slide like a $4000 pistol.
