S&W change to stop trigger mods.

One of my friends who has a SW9VE and has done the (two spring removal) trigger mod, just bought a new SW40VE and was going to do the same trigger mod on it and found that S&W has started center punching the two stage sear pins that hold the sear block in place and he wasn't able to get them out. He tried lightly striking them with a small punch and hammer with the assembly properly braced and they didn't budge, he doesn't see any way to get them out without damaging them. Has anybody else ran into this yet?

Interesting but can't blame 'em. What about the pigtail spring?
 
That really sucks. He said that they punched the shorter pin on both sides and the longer one on the flush side and they won't budge at all. I won't be buying any new sigmas for sure.
 
After thinking about this for a minute. I would like to know how they punched them. Was it on a bench with a hammer and punch, or done buy machine? I ask this because. It seems if I took the sear out and punched the pins with a hammer and punch on my bench. It would bend the sear retainer in toward the sear causing more friction in the sear itself.

If your insistent on getting the sear apart you could use a drill bit to drill slightly. Just enough to get through the punch marks, and then if you had to find a new pin.
 
S&W has also shut off parts for the Sigma sear assembly, so if you tear up anything, used parts are the only option short of sending the whole gun to S&W.

Given the flood of calls to S&W wanting sear parts to mod and others asking for "the free factory trigger job on the Sigma," I guess we should not be too surprised S&W lawyers got into the act.

Sometimes a bit of discretion saves unwanted attention......

I don't get why Smith is shutting off parts if they are continuing to produce the Sigma. What I could see Smith doing is not honoring the warranty on non factory trigger jobs. I do think Smith could have save themselves a lot trouble if they had put a little more effort in to a better trigger from the start.

I dont agree with what most seem to do with theyre sigma I like to do some minor mods which make the trigger heck of alot nicer than stock but I do keep all the parts only exception I would make is strictly for competition use.
 
I went over and checked it out, they look to have been done by machine. they are punched dead center and deep, enough to spread the ends of the pin so they won't budge. I don't think you can drill them without ruining them and from what I can tell you won't get anymore pins or even another sear housing block assembly, so you'll have to send it back to S&W for repair if you do. Brownells and Numrich say they can't get them anymore and Midway USA say they are expecting to get some in on april 8, but I bet if they do get them they will be punched as well. I will probably end up taking the pins out of my gun to a machine shop around here to see if they can make some of them and then drill his out and replace them after polishing everything and doing the mod. S&W just made things tougher, that's all.
 
I haven't downloaded any pictures on here yet, and i didn't get any pictures of his sear assembly today. I will get some and get them on here as soon as I can, so everyone can see for themselves.
 
Taking on the roll of the extreme optimist I can only presume that S&W has made a deal with Apex Tactical to be the exclusive aftermarket modifier of triggers for the Sigma series. Based on that logic Apex's new trigger kit for the Sigma must be a complete drop in unit creating an amazingly smooth trigger with a reasonable weight, clean break and no slack. S&W makes it harder to mod the trigger yourself and thus everyone turns to Apex for their triggery goodness. The Sigma sales go through the roof, Apex Tactical becomes a very lucrative company, Smith comes out the Sigma compact, Apex Tactical gives me 100 shares of stock for this post and S&W hires me to T&E all of their new products. Yep, sounds reasonable to me.

That very well maybe the case with the Apex triggers. As long as it's a reasonable price I may have one. I think it's crappy what Smith is doing. If I want my gun modified that's my deal not theirs. If you want to keep your gun stock, so be it I'm glad you like the stock trigger. My Sigma has springs removed and extensive trigger polishing. The weight of the trigger pull is still in the "duty/carry" specs.

It's junk like this that companies do that make me want to take my business elsewhere. I love my Sigma, but I on the verge of taking it to the pawn shop.:mad:
 
Whats the problem? If you go to your local hobby store you can get springs. If you really want to do the trigger job go to the hobby store. You can also take a torch and weaken the springs so you can jus leave them together and have a light trigger.
