How about a 617 Mountain Gun?
Build it with a tapered barrel using the same profile, narrow rib, and lug as the 67-1 and make it a 6 shooter. BTW, I find 22LR smoky enough to shoot that a 10 round capacity would cause me to have to wait for the smoke to clear for the last 4 shots.
As for why, it's all about balance and keeping the weight down. It's a 22 caliber revolver, for a woods gun there really isn't any need for a heavy barrel. Take some weight out of the barrel and you loose the muzzle heavy feel of the standard 617 and have something easy to carry on the hip all day.

A 22 caliber Mountain Gun? Not my concept of a Mountain Gun, more like a 'kit gun'......and they already exist. A mountain gun to me is a field protection gun when hunting or hiking in......the mountains! A 22 would in no way qualify for that duty. However, any 22 would be useful and necessary as a survival gun for campfire dining. JMHO.

I'm aware of the model 18 and it's a VERY tempting gun. However, I am hooked on Stainless, it's just so easy to put a full polish on. BTW, it's also pretty easy to touch up a mark on a stainless finish that's been polished by just rubbing it out.
As for the Kit guns, I would love to find a model 63. However I have actually NEVER seen one in the flesh so to speak. I am starting to think that the model 63 is an Urban legend.

I have a both the 6 shot 617 and a 63.
I only have $250 into the 617...previous owner has the attention span of a toddler and wanted the 10 shot.
I have already had it round butted and I've been thinking of having the under lug machined off so it mirrors my 4" 66.
When all is said and done, I may have "ruined" it's value but so far it's a hoot to shoot.

Scooter:
My old 18 is nickel plated from Smith. Started life blue. Was sent back by a friend and had Smith nickel it. I traded him a Colt LW commander 45acp even up for it many years ago.
