I received my copy of the 5th edition and the appendix that shows where to by NIB revolvers at the stated prices is missing. Just about everything in the book is way undervalued. Other than that, a lot of new information.
I buy Gun Trader books every few years. Just for informational purposes. I also review Gun Broker sold values, partly for fun, and partly to keep my insurance up to date.
I have yet to see any "book" values that come close to "actual" sales values.
With one exception....I have a 1911 Commercial (NOT A1) Transitional model that has been listed at $11,000 for several years now. I bought it in 1971 for $85. I wonder.....
For at least the past 15 years or more there exists -NO- physical print copy of any reference than can do justice to gun values.
Half of the author team has told us specifically on this forum that the only way they can continue to publish this phenomenal reference book is because the publisher considers it a “price and value guide” even when they freely admit that prices are far too fluid in the gun market to be accurately reflected in a book.
The Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson is best enjoyed as a book that is PACKED with fantastic information about the brand we love.
If I approach a gun show table and the guy on the other side is looking up prices in a book, that really paints a picture before any conversation begins.
