I was at Home Depot yesterday. Bought what I needed and went to the checkout. I went to swipe my card and by mistake pulled out my VA (hospital) card. After noticing the mistake I started to put it back in my wallet and reach for a credit card. The cashier stopped me and said "are you a veteran". After saying yes she said that I get a 10% discount on anything in the store. I thought that was pretty cool. I knew Lowes did it (bought a lawn mower there last year and saved $100) but not Home Depot. Searched the net but couldn't find any list of stores that offer vet discounts. Anybody know of such a list.
Anyway, 10% is 10% especially when buying big ticket items. :)

Yep- just bought a hot water heater yesterday from Lowes, and got 10%. Used to have a hard time remembering to ask for the discount at both Lowes and H/D, but finally it's become automatic now!

Home depot does offer a 10% discount but only at certain times of the year. I never know when I go in whether I'll get it or not, so I just go to Lowe's and I know I'll get it every time.

I just wish that Cabelas gave the discount full time except on Memorial Day or Veteran's Day.

If you register at the Home Depot service desk once, you can always get the military discount at any check out register.

Havbe seen this discussed on other forums. One said that the discount was only for retired vetrans with a government ID card.

I am retired militry and have to show my ID card if I want the discount.

Home Depot has never refused me at any time of the year.

If I buy an item they have already discounted it may take a bit of haggling but they will come through with the additional discount....same at Lowes.

Would seem logical that they mean it for those with an ID card as there are milllions and millions who have served and can say they are veterans.

Does no harm to ask. The worst that can happen is they say no.

Like lots of other things ....it ain't life and death, just a simple no.

I have a veteran's card I got through our DMV. Check your state websites to see if they have one. Mine was 10 bucks and it gives you a link to the businesses in your area that give discounts if you have a card.

Veteran's discount

At the beginning of this year Oklahoma add a Veteran's endorsement on your driver's license if you showed them a copy of your DD214 when you renew it. I forgot Lowes had that discount. Hopefully I can remember next time I go. Thanks for the reminder.

All I show HD and Lowes is my pink Military ID, issued in 1971 when I left active duty..The pink was for inactive reserve..
Not all HD's offer the 10%, my local one does...

Wife and I went to Lowes last week to get a lawnmower blade, as we got to check-out I had to use the restroom ( we live a hour away from the city) wife paid and we meet as she was getting to the door. She asked how much the blade was maked for because it was less than she thought it was turns out my diabled vet discount was taken out when she used the debit card.

I should add, that the HD's that give the 10% discount have a disclaimer on their ad's saying "discount does not apply on sale items" or something to that effect....I have not seen that wording on Lowes ad's..
Case in point, the memorial day ad...Both had Kingsford charcoal twin packs for basically the same price, pennies apart..Lowe's gave the discount, HD would not..

Our local Sears is offering 20% on normal pricing and 5% additional on all sale pricing. I had to show a county government issued veteran photo ID to get the discount. I saved about $50 on my last visit.

This is good news but I don't really see the difference between a retired vet with an ID and a plain old vet who served his time that doesn't have an ID.
I have my DD214 but no kind of ID card. Will that not suffice?

I agree. You should contact the local VA and see about some sort of card.

I've never had a problem showing my veterans identification card at HD or Lowe's for a 10% discount. Lowe's even let me use it for a new washer and dryer! The V.I.C. is issued by the VA. It is a government photo ID that also indicates service connected disability, if applicable.

As I understand it, Lowe's will accept a military retiree's ID
card with a picture, or the VA medical card that has your pic-
ture, but not the DD-214 because it doesn't have you picture
on it.

If your state does so, the next time you renew your driver's
license, have them indicate on your DL that you are a veteran.
I believe that would work.

As mentioned. Lowe's offers the 10% discount all year around,
while Home Depot only offers the 10% discount certain time of
the year. Guess where I shop. :D

Here's something I gleaned from the net.
Home Depot and Lowe's 10% Military Discount Policy - Year Round
I also remember being in an O'Reilly Auto parts store last year that also offered a 10% discount to vets. I think they're a national chain so it might not hurt to check that out too. Get enough discounts and you can save enough money to buy something else.
