I have been cleaning out my reloading room the last few days (long story) and came across 1500 or so 100 grain lead .356 projectiles way in the back of the shelf.

As I am running low on plated 124 gn bullets, with a delay in shipments into the country, I thought about loading these up for practice rounds.

I am also a bit low on powder and the only suitable one I trust that my LGS has in stock is Tightgroup. I usually use W231 but TG is popular here for the 9mm crowd. The Hodgdon website give a maximum of 5 gn of TG under a 100 gn Speer JHP for just under 1,300 fps and 30.300 cup.

Does anyone have any advice about weight/powder combination before I reset my press and start loading?

I cast for both 380 and 9mm … I also had a few pounds of 100gr coated .356 and loaded a few boxes with 4.0gr of TG and 4gr of Bullseye. For range fodder they worked well and fed fine (TC shaped so wasn't sure) in 3 of my Sig 9mm guns.

there isn't a better competition powder than TG that I know of. I use 3.4 gr w 125 TC coated and 3.25 gr for 135 TC coated.

For 100s, maybe 3.6 - 3.8 something like that. Try at your own risk, consult a manual.

The Lyman data starts their 90 gr lead bullet for a 9mm out with 4.3 grs of TG powder.
It cane be pushed to maybe 1500 fps, but why?

I would think that the starting 1100fps with a lead 90 gr bullet should work the action and maybe
give good enough accuracy for target & practice work.

Have fun.

Personally I would determine where the minimum suggested 4.3gr of TG hit the target in relation to your established load(s?) using your plated 124gr bullets.

With Lyman's suggested MAX of 4.8gr you still have another half grain to work with for point of impact on the target and accuracy but you won't have to worry about whether it should "work the action".

Cheers!

P.S. Nevada Ed: where did you get 1,500 fps for a lead 90gr bullet? That's (WAY!) up there in Underwood's 90gr Extreme Defender in 9mm+P or Buffalo Bore's 95gr Barnes 9mm+P+ ranges!

Are you having to make PF for competition, or just operate the gun for practice? 4.1gr of titegroup under 100gr leads works my S&Ws just fine but does not make IPSC minor.

If you have a Lyman booklet for lead 90 gr bullets.....
they are holding back with the w231 powder at 5.1 @ 1455fps.

3N37, Shil and other powders can get a 90 jhp from 1500 to 1555fps in net data for the 9mm.

They state 1255fps for the 90 gr lead bullet, in most manuals, which I think is plenty for lead, no matter what the weight of the bullet, if I shoot it out my pistol or revolvers !!

However if you need speed there is always the 65gr at 1767fps !!

Nevada Ed: you are (again) 100% correct and I just reviewed my new Lyman's 50th...

But... One might need to buy Shooter's Choice by the quart?

Cheers!

P.S. Or there's the Underwood 65gr using the Lehigh Extreme Defender @ 1,700...
