107 year old man shot by Swat Team

Just saw where a 107 year old man was shot and killed by
Swat in a Pine Bluff Ark. domestic call.
Not judging cause i don't know the particulars but I
imagine shooting someone 107 years old would be
kinda tough to deal with. Wonder if non-life threatening
force was at least tried first ?
At least he lived a full life i guess.
Again i'm not blaming the cops. Anybody else see this
in Arkansas and add to the story?

Edit: Sorry did'nt see SIP's thread already posted on the subject.

So, let's see - if I read the article correctly, and it is true (I have my concerns about that one), then everyone was out and no one was in danger.

What was their hurry?

Not that it is a shining example, but I have seen these auto high speed chases go on for longer than this, and those pose a greater health hazard to other drivers on the road. Yet, those idiots are treated with kid gloves by pursuing cops because the news helicopters are watching?

This old man posed far less danger as he was alone and surrounded. Based on this news article, this was a bad show by the Pine Bluff SWAT team.

Perhaps not as bad as a sniper of a well known HRT team shooting a mother holding her infant in her arms from 75 yards or so away, but still a bad show.

These military type operations are sometimes out of hand. Rules of engagement? Poppycock.

News says "Police in Pine Bluff, Arkansas say a 107-year-old man was killed in a shootout with a SWAT team Saturday afternoon."

I guess no matter your age you shoot at SWAT your gonna get shot back at. I guess for him he had his reasons, at least he didn't kill or injure anyone else I give that to him. Still after 107 years on this Earth he could have tried to negotiation his way out or he was just tired of living.

There's a lot about this that doesn't pass the smell test. Sounds like something out of Monty Python...Maybe "107 year old men" (?) have gotten a lot tougher--like Clint Eastwood--but I have trouble believing this was well handled.

Barney Miller probably would have waited till the old guy had a nap and walked out on his own.

Jeez.

There is a lot of facts not reported in the story, like who were the people he pulled a gun on and WHY did he threaten them? The one lone fact that does stand out to me is this was a 107 year old man holed up probley in his own house. I agree, why the hurry? I feel it would or should have been a non incident had the officers just backed off and waited. If they knew he was a 107 years old just how long could he stay awake? 50 years ago I bet 4 out of 5 old time leo would have just talked to the man and there wouldnt even have been a incident to write about. I cant prove that but I feel that.

The police are in a no win situation here. If they "contain and wait" the neighbourhood complains that their lives are disrupted and demand the police to "get in there and do something". Also, I'm afraid the spectre of money appears. Long siege = lots of overtime and other expense that many jurisdictions simply cannot afford. As a result many PDs have a "confront and control in short order" policy in place. This leads to people you would not expect killed or maimed by the police.

Pick your poison.

Seems most departments have manpower for local high school football games etc.

If it saved innocent lives so be it. I back the Leo's 100% they have a very dangerous job to do. Every time some wacko no matter what the age gets upset over life or who are his cookies.

At onetime I was working in Yonkers,ny during the week and I was in vt. On weekends. I'd rather be in vt.

The old guy was isolated, no hostages. WTH was the hurry? You couldn't wait? You had to get the old guy out because of what? The freakin neighbors were bothered? Oh well, the 107 year old guy didn't have long to live anyway!

Arm chair quarterbacking is easy.

If the Officers on the scene acted outside the law and their department's policy they will be held accountable.
