1076 found

I was wondering about the decocker…. I messed up a year ago at a gun show. I guy had a 1076 like new, with 5 mags for seven Franklins. I walked off pondering if I should buy it. I returned to the table within five minutes, and it was gone😢.
So I’ve seen this one at the last two gun shows, so I decided to jump on it…

If I remember correctly there were 3 iterations of 4506. The first marked 4506 with a stepped frame (1988-89), the second marked 4506-1 with non-stepped frame (1989-1998), and the most desirable final version marked only 4506 with the non-stepped frame, black hammer and trigger, and marked 03 on box end (1998 and later).

As to the 1076, not sure what to think - as I recall the internal area under the grip and in the area of the frame mounted safety is substantially different from the more conventional pistols with slide mounted decocker so I would have concerns about the conversion.

So far, only jsbethel touched on things at all here, everyone else is missing or ignoring some things.

On a 1076... the original Sig-style thumb decock lever is gone from this pistol and the slide is from either another gun or the safety unit has been replaced with regulars S&W style decocker/safety parts.

Not only that... the decock lever is some really odd shaped unit that was NEVER shipped on any 3rd Gen I have ever seen, it honestly looks like a 2nd Gen 745 lever that has been altered and reshaped from stock. It is strange.

Furthermore, the hammer is very much non-standard, it too looks a lot like a Model 745 single action only hammer, a shape that is similar to a Model 52 hammer or even a PC 845 Limited, PC 4006 Limited, PPC-9, 952 or 3566 Limited hammer, all of which are SAO target/competition pistols.

This is one oddball 1076. For the right price, hell yeah I would buy it also.

Speaking of that...

Just so all is clear, that price is either someone who has zero clue about the market or he is selling out of his trunk because it's stolen.

Some prices are great, that price is pure lunacy and would have been low 10 years ago.

Ha! It even has the recall punch marks indicating that S&W did work on the Sig-style decock system... that is missing entirely.

For you more knowledgeable souls, should I call and possibly send this thing back to S&W shop?? The person I got it from used to own a pawn shop. He closed it years ago due to health issues. He has been still hitting the gun show circuits locally getting rid of some items. Over the years I’ve gotten to know him fairly well. He said this was his personal gun that he kept loaded at the shop ( in case of robbery attempts). I hope I didn’t get taken too badly. I’m in it for well below a grand.

I just sold a 1006, one I have owned for 31 years, no one on this site was interested in it, so I sold on a different site (AR -15.com).

Absolutely correct! This Model 1076 appears to be some sort of parts mashup.

Personally, I believe the older, metal S&W pistols (of that design) are the best production pistols ever made by Americans. Good on You!
They are so hard to find in my area that I've given up looking and went to CZ 75 families -- all metal and hammer fired!

So did the seller do the mods or does he know the history of the 1076 or was he ignorant of the changes?

Personally i would not trust it as a defensive weapon but maybe for a range conversation piece.

As to sending back to SW - thats worth a call but i doubt they have the parts to make it right - most likely they would keep it to avoid liability And offer uou a new current production pistol.

1) there are precious few reasons that I would send -ANY- gun back to the jokers running that joint currently. Suffice to say, today's S&W is one that I trust for almost nothing. Were this gun mine, NO WAY would I send it to S&W. I would love to see my own opinion about them change over the next 5-10-20 years. Right now? There is nothing about them that gives me confidence.

2) Well below a grand, you did not get taken. If you bought this in hopes of flipping it for big bucks, you may have trouble. If you bought it because you wanted a S&W 10mm chambered 3rd Gen, you did fine. Without playing with it myself I cannot say if everything works as it needs to and always will, but regardless of these odd parts brought together, I suspect this pistol will run.

3) if you truly want to know where this gun stands and be certain of it, and you are willing to pay for a skilled professional, contact forum user BMCM right here on this site. I am sure that he could flesh out this pistol, tell you what parts you have and explain what's been done, what to expect and if he has the parts available, it's possible that he could return this to stock or quite close.

The very idea that this gun would show up today at Smith & Wesson and literally ANYONE on the property have a solid idea of it is almost laugh worthy.

The previous owner said he did not do anything but shot it. I got with the full intention of keeping it.
I guess sending it back to S&W is out of the question. I sent one back to them way back around 1989-1990. They not only fixed it, one of the custom pistolsmiths tuned it free of charge. But, that was back then. I guess I’ll have to contact BMCM for help. Thanks. As soon as I get a chance to try it, if it functions, it’s a keeper, period.

Nice one. S&W has great service. They have looked at my 1076 about a year ago.
