The favorite shotgun thread revealed a lot of Plus 2 magazine extensions. I would like to add a Plus 2 to a Mossberg 930 85320 18.5". Are all mag extensions created equal? What about a different follower? I see them advertised but not sure what it buys me.
As long as I am asking, what's the recommended method for loading one in the chamber? Load the magazine, cycle the action then top off?

I just added a Nordic extension to a Beretta 1301 Comp. It's now 12 +1. Go to the Nordic sight and look. I did go with a new follower. The Nordic follower is red and gives me a visual cue.

I can't really recommend a single manufacturer because my platform of choice is the Remington 870, but I can tell you I spent a lot of time researching magazine extensions for it.

I ultimately decided on the factory extender, which comes with a barrel clamp. I don't know if Mossberg makes a factory extension for your 930, but it's worth a look at least.

All I can say is, don't be fooled into overpaying for extensions that are built beefier than the shotgun itself. Reason being that no matter how overbuilt the extender is, most shotgun mag tubes have very shallow threads with little support.

Also, don't be fooled by manufacturers who claim that their product is so strong, you don't need a barrel clamp. If the threads and tube are sturdy enough to withstand the extension getting occasionally banged around, I could understand it. Otherwise, I wouldn't skimp on one.

Just my advice which, along with $2, will get you a large coffee at Dunkin. ;)

If memory serves me correctly, somewhere along the way, Remington changed the threads on their Model 870 to prevent the use of aftermarket extensions.

As for loading, I always prefer to load from the magazine as this allows the rim to slip under the extractor. Dropping a round into the open action works also. Manually chambering a round, then closing the bolt forces the extractor over the rim. No harm really done but doing this, long term, will shorten the extractor's life.

The treads are he same. What happened was a change in the spring retainer. The old type was a friction fit in the tube. The new spring retainer is a twist lock. For it to lock in a small dimple was pressed into the tube for the retainer to lock on. The dimple was just deep enough to catch on the rim of the shell causing the shells to hang up in the tube. The proper way to correct it was to use a mag tube dent remover to flatten the dimple back out. The bubba way was to put a sanding wheel in a Dremil type tool and grind the dimple down.

I just looked at one for my Rock Island M-5 and installation on youtube. It adds 2 rounds. They swear for 2 rounds one does not need a new spring. One might look at it to get the name of the manufacturer.

Choate is my choice for my gun and my show table.
Their package includes Tube, Spring, Clamp, Follower

Choate Machine & Tool - Mossberg 5500, 935, 9200 . 7 Shot Extension - Product Details

This page shows the Follower - the extended portion is to keep the spring from jumping coils if attempt is made to load TOO MANY shells.
Choate Machine & Tool - Choate - Manufacturer Details

I have a Nordic extension and Magpull clamp on an 870 that I traded for.
They are GREAT products - at a higher price.
