15-22, Quest for USR might be over....

Newbe here, and been looking very hard at the 15-22 as my next purchase, could be the ultimate squirrel rifle. I've been helping a couple of pecan orchard owners keep the rodents in check on their places and always looking for ways to do things better.

But anyhow, I've been looking for information on the mid range accuracy of these rifles, have had some feedback on a tactical 22 blog, but I would like to see some pictures of how these rifles print on paper at 25 and 50 yards, and with what ammo.

Another thing I was wondering is would there be any problems replacing the M4 style stock with a non adjustable A2 style?

Again, thanks for the help in advance. If this isn't something that would fit my bill then I'd rather hear it from ya'll prior to me making a $450 mistake. The cool factor is really there, and I know that I can the best accuracy out of a bolt gun, but really want a semi auto and honestly have no desire to build a 10/22. I'm just needing MOS accuracy (Minute of Squirrel).

The stock cannot be changed to a A2 style. its all one piece of molded polymer.

If all youre shooting is 50 yards or so, this gun will do, but.. if youre going to be doing more.. id look at a .17 HMR. by no means am I saying that you cant do what you want to do with this gun, but a .17 would do everything you need, and double the distance. the ammo is a little more expensive, but theres a reason for that... it does about 200 yards in a flat line!

i don't think you'll have any trouble acheiving MOS accuracy to 50 yards. there have been a lot of targets posted here (search accuracy).

just out of curiosity, why do you want to put a fixed A2 stock on the rifle? if it's for stability, just pin your fixed stock. in any event, i don't think you can mount a standard fixed stock because the "buffer tube" is solid so you can't screw the stock in without some modification. for what it's worth, i've got a magpul ctr on mine and it's really solid, much better than the OE collaspible.

my 2 cents, get one with a flash hider if you decide to get one. good luck!

Appreciate the input and info. I do a bit too much off season practice and plinking to jump to a .17, and with most of my shots being less than 50 yards, kind of hard to justify one personally. I did take one at 108 yards with my mod 60 but everything for taking that shot was perfect. Maybe someone here with a little pull with Smith could talk them into offering a heavy barrel Mach2 version, now that would be cool! Thanks again.

actually.. I shouldnt say 200 in a flat line. depending on the ammo (obviously) but good ammo will rise about 5 inches, and come back to zero at 200 yards.

I'll check into the magpul ctr stock and see how lefty friendly it is, weighing alot of options now as I've got 'til Aug to get something and have it sighted in and be famular with it. I'll also check and see what i can find with the search option. Appreciate the info.

cool deal, and yes a H BBL would be great! I can TOTALLY understand what you mean about the plinking aspect. thats exactly why I got mine. i dont see why you couldnt get great results about to 125 yards or so. sounds like all you need to do, is load up w/ stingers.. and enjoy the eradication!

50 to 75 yard MOS accuracy is about all I would ask out of the rifle most of the time, and if I get a shot longer than that and miss I can probably just chalk it up to that squirrel hasn't reached his expiration date yet. I do want to top it with quality optics, something like a Mueller APV or a Leopold 6x42 AO. These farmers count on me to stop these rodents from chewing up $1000s of dollars of pecans per year, in turn I get free places to hunt, so I want to do maximize my time when I'm out there.

The search for pictures came up with some good results with iron sights at 50 yards, I figure with a good scope quarter sized groups are very achievable with this gun.

Also, got to get the information on how to make those 10 round clips. I'll keep a couple of 25 rounders for playing around, but those 10 round clips would be the trick for hunting.

no problem! yeah, w/ a 6x scope, especially a nice one, you should have $.25 size groups with no problems. I just put a 1.5 inch 5 shot group at 50 yards on iron sights with no problem. i wouldnt mind throwing a scope on just for fun. but most of the time, id have to be more 'tacticool'! LOL

It would work for me.

I'm comming to the conclusion that building a 10/22 might be cheap compaired to spec'ing one of these critters out with all the options ya can go with.

The cheek peice on this weapon sure would work nice for a lefty, looks like it would make eye allignment with the scope nice.

Depends on what you can get the 15-22 for and where you want to end up.

In my case, it was MUCH MUCH cheaper to buy a 15-22 than to get the Ruger, put a collapsible stock and forend rails on it.

Yea, I say that jokingly. I've added up all the components to build what I would want in a 10/22 and I could probably buy close to 2 MP 15-22s for the same money.

I was sort of under the conclusion that the buffer tube would be housed inside the stock. Wasn't aware that the built in fake buffer tube would need to be cut off to use that stock.

My guess is that its made for a standard AR platform, and if that is true, its not designed to slide over a buffer tube. i may be wrong tho.
