I was on a praire dog shoot last Sunday and fired over 500 rounds. That evening thinking that the bore would be absolutely filthy, decided to run a brush and patch to clean it out.

To my surprise, almost no fouling at all!! The last round fired was just as accurate as the first in my CZ 452.

Several others that I have spoken with on this topic have had the same experience.

What is it about the make up of the .17 HMR that makes it so easy to clean, with almost no fouling at all?

I have Ruger Precision 17 HMR, I also was surprised after shooting 500 rounds, the bore was clean.
I also found the rifle is very accurate, today at the range it was pouring rain, and accurate.
Must be the Ammo, it's not dirty like 22LR Ammo.
This was at 100 yards.

I have a Ruger M77/22WMR Laminate with the Target Gray finish. I put a 17HMR Green Mountain 18" SS fluted barrel on it quite a few years ago. The .22WMR barrel has been sitting in my gun safe ever since then. The 17HMR is a flat-out tack driver using Hornady 17gr V-Max ammo. Maybe because the bore diameter is so small that it doesn't get as dirty as .22 cal rimfires, I don't know. What I do know is that the little .17HMR does some serious damage on game like ground hogs, fox, raccoons, etc.

I've got a Savage 17 HMR and I've shot if over the past few years and ran a brush down it once and its still very accurate. Just ask the squirrels that used to live in my back yard. ;)

I have a friend with the CZ version of the 17 HMR and killed a coyote at 100 yards with it. It's a devastating little round.

I had an early 17 HMR from Anschutz I bought the bore guide and cleaning rod. After a break in shooting session not one bit of fouling, I was amazed!

I had a Marlin 17 Mach 2, it shot fantastic also, but I shot three different groundhogs from less that 20 yards, one in the body, one in the shoulder, and one in the head. They all got to their hole before they expired. That cartridge shoots great, It just doesn't do anything when it gets there!

And here in Montana on praire dogs big and little the results are very devastating!
How much larger are groundhogs than a praire dog? A rancher friend of mine gets very dramatic results on coyotes with his .17 HMR....

My wife and I have .17 HMRs. Hers is a CZ 452 American, mine a single shot NEF Sportster. Both have Leupold 3x10 variables. Spectacular results on ground squirrels in our pasture. Very accurate, and no fouling to speak of although I run a bit of oil in the bore at the end of the season.
