Hello S&W forums. Just found this great site and I am happy to say I inherited my first S&W. The problem is, it is in pieces. I figured I could piece it back together, but I have had no luck. When I try to put the hammer back on I notice that a mechanism which is attached to the pawl that holds the cylinder in place is in the way. However I try there is no way for me in insert the hammer back in. I try to lower that piece all the way down but there is not enough room. I am worried that the hammer was not supposed to be able to come out with the rest of the parts in place like they are. The hammer also has a tiny hinged arm on the bottom that I cannot figure out. When it comes to firearms I am an amateur and have no experience with repairs. I was wanting to get an opinion and make sure that there is not something I am missing before I try to find someone to repair it. I took some photos and identified as best as I could.

The part You call pawl is the sear. Pulling the trigger normally lowers the sear from contact with the hammer when re-assembling. If it doesn't lower when the trigger is pulled, the sear needs to be removed (the cross pin) and reinstalled so the trigger does retract the sear.

Thank you for the information. What tool do I need to remove the cross pin? Sorry for the complete lack of knowledge in disassembling and part names.

A punch smaller than 1/16" diameter - and a lot of care. You would be best advised to take the job to someone who has experience with your type of gun.

Sgtbeef, get yourself a copy of
Antique Firearms, Assembly/Disassembly" by David R. Chicoine. Published by Gun Digest. It shows your gun's assembly in detail. Ed.
