1911 Colt

The only gun I still have from my first gun buying years is a Ruger Single Six .22 and .22 mag (1968). You are fortunate to have bought and kept that classic 1911. I remember when Colt raised their price on the 1911 to $125. My thought was ....Who in the heck is going to pay THAT much for a plain 'ol 1911 ?!?!.....That's a whole month's rent !

My old SS has been "modified" so much over the years it was never worth trying to sell. Besides, it really came in handy one night on the Appalachian trail when the campground was invaded by rowdies on motorcycles. They never saw my SS. But they decided to leave when they heard me tell my brother to "Get the gun out of my pack".

Have the "Colt-wood" grips survive ?

Good question. I remember taking them off my Commander and when I was cleaning the gun years later I noticed they no longer would fit. Hole spacing had apparently shrunk enough to keep them from going over the grip screw bushings. :(

Back to the topic, what a nice old Colt! - and neat grips, too! :)

When I got out of the Navy in 1973, I bought myself several guns...a Colt 1911, a Colt Python, and a S&W Model 29. I ended up selling them later on to help pay for college. I wish I still had them, and had found some other way to pay the bills (I did work full time while I was in college...and I had the GI Bill, but still had to pay my living expenses.) i don't remember what I paid then, but it would a heck of a lot less than they cost today!

My first very-own handgun was a High Standard Deluxe Sentinel, .22, with 6" barrel. Bought it at a K-Mart. They were priced back then at $59.95, but I got it for $49.95 -- they had it priced wrong, caught their error, but stood by the marked price. As I recall, I bought a brick of Remington ammo with the $10 I saved, and went home with change...

Dick, since you already have it in the box, all you need to do is wrap it. I will even come and get it if you don't want to drive a couple of miles to my house.

Nice 1911 - shame its so 'new' :D

first guns - sold most of them from my first 6-10 years of buying them. STILL have my 25-2 that I bought my first year in the army! But sold a S&W model 10 HB (this year bought one from a police turn in from SOG (?) ) - but a Ruger or two, a colt Python, all long gone, although the Python I sold on consignment for $325, the money allowed me to buy a buffed and reblued artillery luger, which I still have :)

I remember that in the late 1960s, it was still possible to buy a GI 1911A1 for $50-$75. I clearly remember that about that time I was approached by a guy who had two nice ones, and he wanted $100 for both. I didn't buy them.

I bought this 1967 Colt in 1968,paid $90.00,
added Sid Bell pewter grips.Still new like it left the factory.
I`ve had this Colt for 49 years,(unbelievable)

Super COOL!!! I have owned many guns (some come & go), but a Colt 1911 still eludes me. Currently have 4 1911's. Bob
