I recently purchased an S&W Pro Series 1911 in 9mm. I am considering installing Crimson Trace grips which require a modified right side thumb safety. Is anyone familiar with the proceedure to remove the saftey for modification? I thought that the extended base, which extends under the right grip might be the retainer, but that's not the case.
tia, from a newbie.

I think (being different types),
you remove the right thumb safety first. Place a knife edge underneth and gently pry it up.
Place a piece of paper over the gun to protect it's finish.
Then go & and wiggle the L side off (about 1/2 up or between on and off). Hammer is cocked to get the L side off.

if your have the safety that rides under the grip

its a press fit where the two halves of the right and left side pin meet.

as 500 said, have to work off.

alot of times, you can just grab the serration part of the right side safety and apply upward pressure and work it out. if not, pry time.

Thanks guys. As I've learned in life, there's always someone out there that know the answer to your question. It only took slight prying, and it popped right off. Crimson Trace grips, here I come.

I'm planning to trim the existing piece to fit. I'll probably then order a replacement, just to have on hand if I ever decide to remove the grips and go back to original.
If I knew for sure that S&W had a shortened replacement, I'd just order on of those. Crimson Trace supposedly has short safeties, but I don't know if they would match the S&W models.

sinkhole,

this is just a suggestion

and I am not sure you can just order the right or ambi side only lever

but save your original lever just in case you go back factory.

call SW and see if they will sell you a ambi lever only

if C/T is your only source for an ambi lever, then I would go that route.

my 2 cents

Well, I installed a set of Crimson Trace Laser grips on my pistol. I was all set to remove the right thumb safety and trim it down, but decided to fit the grips first. To my astonishment, the grips allow the safety to travel to the "almost off" position without trimming. For all intents and purpose, it's off, and the right safety lever is just nested against the laser. I could have filed the bottom of the lever so that it traveled a little more, but it works fine as is. I ran 100 rounds through the gun today with no trouble what so ever.

Ooooops! Forgot the pic.
