just got this new pistol the other day and i'm not sure i like the checkering on the mainspring housing. i would like to know if there are any aftermarket mainspring housings that are smooth or that have a smoother pattern on them, kind of like the ed brown bobtail mainspring housings with the snakeskin or chainlink pattern, that will fit the 1911sc e series. if anyone has any info or links to something that would fit this pistol with the "round butt" that would be great.

I can understand your initial reaction to the aggressive checkering on this gun as I noticed the same thing. But what I discovered is that with the added recoil associated with the lighter frame the checkering gives a little added control that is nice when compared to, say, an all steel 5" 1911. The Sc recoil is not so much a "push" like the 5" but more of a "kick" like a revolver...at least that is how it seems to me.

I'm not complaining...love the gun...but the shooting characteristics are to be expected in a lighter gun shooting the same round. JMHO:)

I wouldn't know anything about what might be available aftermarket...sorry.:o

When you shoot your new toy you will understand what lhump is saying. Great point lhump, could not have said it better.

I bought a Dan Wesson CCO which is an alloy officers frame and commander length slide.

it came with chainlink front strap and chainlink MSH.

shooting ball ammo, I can feel the gun rock or slide in my hand under recoil.

I wrapped the front strap with 3M skateboard tape and bought a plastic checkered MSH. What a difference that made in shoot ability.

I gave up a little in looks but gained alot in control.

Really like that LE badged grip! I'm not qualified to carry that but would love to find something similar with a Marine Corps emblem.

Installing a bobtail or round butt mainspring housing will require re-profiling the existing grip to match. In addition in the case of the Ed Brown Bobtail housing you'll have to drill the grip frame for a new mounting pin high up on the grip. Good news is that Ed Brown sells a jig to locate this new mounting pin location. Bad news is that if you aren't an experienced Machinist or Gunsmith I would recommend paying a gunsmith to do the conversion. I would also suggest that you DO NOT do this on one of the Scandium frame models because the new hole for the mounting pin won't be anodized and IMO it will go egg shape over time. In addition the areas that have been ground will also lack any anodizing and be distinctly prone to getting scratched or dented.

Bottomline, these types of modifications should be reserved for the original manufacturer if it's being done on an aluminum alloy frame. Trying to re-anodize a previously anodized frame is an invitation to dimensional changes and an uneven surface that won't ever look right. Try and do without anodizing in some areas and you leave an area that is much much softer than the anodized areas and extremely prone to getting marked up.

On the other hand doing this type of modification on a stainless steel frame is easy peasy. You grind the contour to match the new mainspring housing, so a bit of graduated wet sanding to remove any deep scratches, and then bead blast the frame to match it's original finish.

Ihump,

the grips were made by Larry Davidson. The badge tie tac was from the dept I work for. I got into a little hot water for doing that by Admin but over time it went away.

actually my 1911 tie clip used to cause much controversy with old Admin.

if you have the USMC tie tac, just contact Larry Davidson. He will machine out the area and adhere it in the grip panel. He goes by Monkey Grips

Thanks much for the lead on the grips. By the way...I like someone who's not afraid to test the tolerances of the boss and blur the lines a little.;)

I have to agree, completely. Shooting it is a whole new level of experience. I love my S&W 66, and my M&P Pro 5", but the 1911sc Bobtail is hands down my favorite shooting gun. And it was a Christmas present. :)
