Working through Kuhnhausen with my 'new' 1937 Brazilian I managed, of course, to launch the cylinder bolt plunger across the deck where it fell through the cracks.

A replacement from Numrich proved to be much too short, leaving the bolt rattling front to back. I returned it, but the replacement seems to be the same length: just about 3/8 of an inch.

Does Numrich have the wrong parts bin, or is there something else wrong here?

How long is your bolt plunger?

Thanks

Mine measures .544", and Dia. = .095". Almost lost mine a couple times, keep forgetting about it. I keep carpet samples on my benchtop to keep things from bouncing around and rolling off. Also, keeps guns from getting scratched up. You can usually find them (outdated samples) at any carpet store, building center, etc. for about a $1.00.

Thanks H

Just to confirm, this IS a 1917 bolt plunger we are talking about?

This would mean that Numrich has mixed up their parts bins, or S&W is shipping the wrong parts.

Have any of the action changes since 1937 involved differences in plunger length?

Thanks again

This is the plunger that fits in the crane pin that slides into the frame. Mine is a Brazilian shipped in 1946, (made with left over 1917 parts) so it is 1917. I'm not aware of any changes in the 1917. If your rattles around, perhaps you have also lost the spring that fits behind the plunger? If the spring is long enough, it may work just fine. Just meeds to put a little pressure on the pin within the frame.

The part is what Kuhnhausen calls the cylinder bolt plunger. The thumb latch is attached to the cylinder bolt through the slot on the left side of the frame.

The spring is still here, it was long enough to launch the original plunger into the ozone, but isn't long enough to bring the 'new' plunger into contact with the frame.

If we are on the same page, Numrich has sent me the wrong part twice. I have emails in to the service dept. and to their parts forum.

Thanks HR

I got an answer from Numrich this morning. They pulled a plunger from a complete 1917, the plunger is .648".

They are sending it to me now.

I don't know what the .375 plunger is made for, or even if it is an S&W part. Inventory nightmare.

Thanks again

Sorry to hear about your trouble. Numrich is famous for sending the wrong parts..
