I don't know if anyone was following this auction, it closed last night with a final bid of $2425. That really surprised me but made me feel better about the one I picked up a couple weeks ago.

Smith Wesson 1917 Commercial Denver PD NO RESERVE : Revolvers at GunBroker.com

Why would this one sell for so much? Was it the possible Denver PD connection? Someone looking to fill a hole in their collection?

The PD connection was a large part and the Seller always gets top dollar for his items.People just love to overpay for his stuff....

Seems a little high but commercial 1917s in original condition are pretty hard to find. Wouldn't have been worth that much to me but I can see where a 1917 collector would be willing to pay a premium for it. Much harder to find, and more desirable in my opinion, than a readily available 1980s Python and those sell in that range every day.

The Commercial version is at the top end of the M1917 family (perhaps along with the Post War Transitional) and those in excellent condition are hard to come by. A "collector" grade gun of this status shouldn't be compared price wise to a "shooter" grade Brazilian. The only thing that they have in common is the M1917 name. The police connection adds an additional element to the market segment, too.

That seller gets good responses to his sales because he gives a trusted and accurate description, takes good pictures, and stands behind his sales.

There is just no reason to slam one of the most highly regarded
prominent purveyor of collectible smith and wessons.

I have bought many pieces from them and have been extremely satisfied

What I have learned from David Carroll along the way is very precious to me as well.

It's not a slam,Its the truth.

$2,200 for a refinished nickel 3rd model 44?
Almost 4k for a 4" TL that looks like it was drug behind a Truck?

If You are OK overpaying for something because it came from a certain seller that's fine with me.There is no way that any other seller would have got the prices above.

05,

Unless you were implying fraud (which I don't think that you were!) we all embark on a "fool's errand" when we attempt to explain why one of us pays something for an item that another would value less, or more.

This forum is loaded with folks who beat their chests ("How'd I do??") for a perceived "steal" and, on the other hand, most of us have certainly felt like we made a good deal but awakened the next morning with buyer's remorse. That is just a part of this hobby that we all enjoy.

Sure makes me feel good about mine that fits David's description except for the PD part.
