1962 38 short revolver

I have come across a 1962 5 shot top break 38 short revolver and was wondering what its value may be?

There weren't any Smith & Wesson top breaks made after WW2. It seems you are confused. Pics?
Also, .38 Short refers to a different Colt round. The 'short' S&W .38 cartridge is just called .38 S&W.
 
Need more information to help/ Where did you get the 1862 date from.
Photos and serial number needed.

Thank you for the responses, I have been trying to figure out how to get pics from my phone on to here with out success. I am new to guns so I could very easily be confused. The serial number on the bottom of the handle is 262053, I called into S&W and the young lady indicated she could give me the manufacture . date, but not the value, that is where I got the 1962. If anyone can figure it out by just the serial number I will be very impressed and grateful. thx.
 
If it is a Smith & Wesson product (some makers would stamp their guns as such but referring to the caliber, probably trying to fool people they were S & W revolvers) and it is a .38 with an exposed hammer, the only model it could be is a .38 Double Action. It would date to the early 1890s. Sometimes the factory is not too good on the production dates of older guns, say by about 70 years or so :).
 
Lots of questions that a photo could answer.

I'll assume that it's got a 5-round capacity cylinder and a visible hammer.

Your sn is slightly too high for a safety hammerless, and too low for a .38 DA "Perfected", so my guess is that you've most likely got a .38 DA 4th model. If so, around 104,000 manufactured between 1898 and 1907. -S2
 
If it's even an S&W.

Many inexperienced people see the ".38 Smith & Wesson" caliber marking and assume that's also the gun's maker.

That serial number would work out to 1962 if a J-frame Chief Special with a side-swing cylinder.

The .38 S&W (Shorter .38 not the special) model "Terrier" I think were all done before 1962 and not sure but think were a different SN range than the Chiefs, too.

Don't follow the Terriers much so you guys that do, jump in here.
