I would like to share my latest 44 magnum acquisition. An 1963, S prefix, 8 3/8" barrel. Its in excellent condition with correct tools and a nice presentation case interior and exterior.

The Smith and Wesson 44 magnum has always been my favorite handgun. When I was just a kid the 8 3/8" barrel was my favorite. As I got a little older the 6 1/2" barrel rose to the top. Now I can't choose between a 6 1/2" or a 4" barrel length as a favorite.

With the exception of a 1989 mountain revolver, all of my S&W 44's are five screw, four screw and early S-prefix dash 2's. Maybe one day I will be fortunate enough to own a dash 1 and sometimes I think an early 4" nickel would fit nicely with my collection.

When I log into the Forum, any 44 magnum related threads always get my immediate attention! Thanks all for sharing your wealth of knowledge on all things S&W.

No, it didn't come from the OGCA show. I've never been a member but have been fortunate enough to attend some of the OGCA shows through the years. I remember the ones at Vets decades ago and they were amazing.

I'm lucky enough to own S231732, though it came to me in a much later Type VI case. Yours probably has an L stamped on the rear of the cylinder, for left hand ejector rod thread.

Our serial numbers are less than 500 apart W4. Is your barrel 8 3/8"? Pics if you have them please!

Model 29-2, S231233, 5-inch barrel, shipped to H. H. Harris, Chicago, IL on March 7, 1963. L stamped on the rear of the cylinder indicating an extractor rod and stem with an improved, left-hand thread. Click on the photo for a better look.

Very very nice W4. I really like the reddish tone to the wood in the coke's.

My 6.5" dash 2 is from 1965 and the blue rivals my four and five screw 44's. The factory worker was having a good day on the polishing wheel.😁

Thanks for sharing, I never tire of looking at N-frame Smith & Wessons.
