1979 Colt New Frontier

I bought a 7 1/2" NF in .44 Special, back about 1980. I think Colt must have built these to look at and not shoot, as mine was rough as a cob. After I polished it up, it was a good shooter.

I hope yours actually IS a shooter!
For the most part, those Colt New Frontiers have chamber and throat dimensions that are all over the map. The 44 Specials can be some of the worst, unfortunately.

Best wishes with yours!

I'll check it. Thanks.

Chamber throats are all about .434. I guess I'll have to shoot it and see what I get.

That might work out just fine with the right bullets!!

Do you cast your own bullets?
If so, you might do just fine if you shoot them at "as cast" diameter. Many .44 molds will drop bullets at .433-.434".
You can tumble lube them unsized. I've found that in this size range you can get tight groups and little-to-zero leading, especially with a middle ground approach to lead hardness (BHN 9-14, or so. Not too hard, not too soft). 44 Special standard loads are perfect with this type of bullet.

If you don't cast, search around for online cast bullet suppliers that take custom size orders.

It is a very NICE looking Colt. Hopefully, you can coax some good shootin' loads for it!

I never owned a New Frontier but I did pick up my friend's 22LR version and did this with it. Hope yours is accurate as well.
