What should one expect to pay for a 6 inch 629-1 ( excellent condition, but box and original grips are missing) ?

If it were rubber grips, it would probably be marked at $750 in my area. Add $100 for Smith targets.

I want to know where all these $600-$800 Model 29's and 629's can be found today. Yeah, before 2020 they were prevalent, but this is 2025 and we have had 4 years of monetary inflation. I'd say excellent condition, with box, but incorrect stocks, probably $1000. A set of period correct target stocks in excellent condition will likely run around $150-$200.

Even at shooter grade and without the box $900 and up seems to be the starting price.

I was thinking the same thing. Definitely not at a gun show or gun broker. And none of the forums I occupy, and it's a lot.
And I think quite a few years before 2020

Some 629-1 were subject to recall by S&W along with some 624s. Get the serial number and check with S&W to see if it was recalled. The recall effected a certain serial number range and specific ship dates from the factory for both the 629-1 and 624.

I own a couple of 629-1s but niether were recalled. One fell outside of the serial number range and the other one was in the recall number range BUT a check with S&W showed it fell OUTSIDE the factory ship date range. So no recall on that one either.

I paid $615 for this 629-1 about 12 years ago so that price might be a pipe dream now. I installed the Millett rear sight (it's my .44 target gun) and nicer stocks from my collection - I also have a set of nice Combat stocks for it. I feed it nothing but 240-grain cast semi-wadcutters over 10.0 grains of SR4756.

I found this thread while doing some research for the 629-1s I am planning on selling, so I guess I have two of them. One is pretty much the same as in the OP. If I decide to put an add up, would $750 + shipping be considered a fair price for a 629-1 six inch with Pachmayr grippers and no box? FWIW, the other one is an eight inch with really beat up factory stocks. BTW, I usually just lurk here, so I'm still figuring out how to post pics, etc.
