Here’s a couple of 44 special hand ejectors.

The 3rd model is a Houston Police Department gun, HPD number 13. I was fortunate to get this one recently. It definitely looks the part with the finish being as it is and looks to have been dropped on the frame near the rear sight. Who knows what stories it could tell. I was showing some buddies the gun and tried 6 shots after doing some work outside. I wanted to send them a blurb on the Furniture Store shootout in Houston which brought about the the dept ordering these 44s. One of the first articles was contained in a gun auction description from 2012. It was this very gun, number 13. It also describes the topstrap rash from being dropped. So at least the mark predates 2012 ;)
It has character but has a squeaky clean bore and chambers. I look forward to shooting it more when I can next get the chance.

The other 44 is a 2nd model, very late production based on the serial 60729. Unfortunately it didn’t come to me with the original stocks but the aftermarket magnas on it suit it well I think. Anyone have an example with a serial as high as this one? It’s just beyond the serial range given in the 4th Edition S&W Standard Catalogue for 2nd models.

Both these have such buttery smooth actions. I’ve already spent some time with the 2nd model. It’s a sweet one to shoot though I much prefer the 5 inch for handling. There’s something about a 5 inch N frame with the ejector shroud that’s revolver perfection.

Does anyone know if the HPD 3rd models were ordered all at once or in separate batches?

Your HPD Smith is in much better shape than mine.
Attached below is a short story of the officers that were killed which resulted in the PD ordering the 44 caliber Smith.

Two neat guns!
That is the highest number 2nd Model I've ever seen.

HPD 13 is a neat gun. I used to own it. :D
You may not realize it, but 13 is in high condition for an HPD 44. I've owned, sold, or otherwise handled several dozen HPDs in my time. Many are doggy. Many are refinished. They havee led a hard life.
At the time I bought 13, it was the best I had seen. Please post a pic of the drop dings you mentioned. Can't remember that exactly. Do the grips number to it? I had bought a slightly better gun and a friend of mine in CA really wanted one, so it left me. Funny it went from GA to CA and is apparently back in GA now?? ;)
I'll try to dig mine out in the next few days.

You don't seem to be such a Casual Smith Nut now. You ought to join the SWCA. Tell em I sentcha. :D

I’m trying not to collect! And trying to keep telling myself that LOL. We’ll see how long I can hold out…

Yes the stocks are serial matching. I’m surprised that they’re in as decent shape as they are given the rest of the gun’s condition. Here’s some more pics. Glad to be the current caretaker. I’m pretty sure this one is staying with me. I didn’t realize that so many were dogs and had led such a hard life. It helps me to appreciate mine more. The front sight also has seen some love from being dropped probably.

“This is getting funny now. I used to own your gun too!”

Soooo, Mr. Jarrett have you owned all the cool S&Ws? Or just all the .44s. 😎😂

Thanks for the extra pics of 13. I remember the frame ding now. Just couldn't picture it from memory. I remembered the front sight ding.

Lee, during what approximate timeframe did you own HPD 13? Also do you remember where you got it? Who knows how many hands this one and many of the others have passed through.

I took the name “Casual” as there was already a “Smith Nut” on the forum long before I joined. It was my attempt to maintain the mentality: try not to collect. I’m not really succeeding at it though evidently. It’s too interesting to ignore all the cool info, history, and variations out there. Some have shortened my handle to CSN occasionally. Coincidentally I do enjoy Crosby Stills & Nash as well as when Young joined later on. I see CSN as the vocal equivalent of Cream in instrumental virtuosity. It’s music before my time but, as a musician, I enjoy the older stuff.

I have a late production 2nd model as well, very close to yours. I'll have to get it out of the safe and look at it closer.
Another 2nd model 44 HE

Wow yours looks VERY nice and has the original magnas! Looked at your post from 2022. You mentioned your serial is 607xx. Mine is 60729. We’ll see who holds the highest 2nd model serial LOL! You gotta post a pic to play! Someone else will probably come along with a later one than us…
Also, you mentioned your 2nd model lacks the spring and plunger in the hold open detent. Mine is the same way. Didn’t realize it until looking more closely yesterday.
