20 round boxes of handgun ammo.

20 round boxes tend to be around $20. 50 round boxes tend to be around $30. Math is clear.

There was a dealer in St. Louis who used to make a killing every New Year's by selling individual rounds. Some extravagant party-goers would even spring for a whole cylinder full. Lots of noise, and nobody got hurt to amount to much. LOL

:)

Why do people buy it? One of the biggest scams going.

Let's evaluate this logically.

1) Some SD ammo may only come in 20 or 25 round boxes.
2) Retail stores may only buy ammo in 20 round boxes.
3) Many people who buy a gun for SD may only buy a single box of target ammo and shoot it at the range and then buy (or have sold to them) a single 20 round box of SD ammo that they'll load up a single magazine or cylinder full of ammo and place the gun in their nightstand drawer never to be taken out and fired ever again.

The list goes on...

These days 20/25 is what you can get. Rarely I find 50/100 round boxes of hollow point, and may buy them price permitting.
If I am shopping for HP for myself, I go to a local LEO supply company, which has limited stock and severe limits on quantity, but does have all 50 round or more package sizes. I buy 50, shoot two mags, then load the rest.

LE pays NO FEDERAL EXCISE TAX. Many times PD's will sell old stock to vendors such as SGammo or ammotogo, etc. That is how these vendors manage to get 50 rd. boxes of LE ammo as the manufacturers strictly forbid the selling of certain LE ammo to the general public. That's why you don't see any +p+ ammo at retail stores.

Not paying the tax is a huge savings for LE that gets passed on down the road. So, retailers are not trying to shaft you on prices, it just taxes.

Because most top-end defensive rounds only come in 20 or 25. Not all, but most. At least the rounds I like for carry and HD do.

It's the only time I buy small boxes. Range ammo is bulk or 50 count boxes.

20 round boxes....thats a lot of ammo.

When I first started helping out in Uncle Hal's gun shop we had gentlemen coming in asking to buy a "load of 38"

Silly me, the first time this happened I thought the buyer wanted lots of ammo, perhaps a case.

The buyer was looking to purchase 6 rounds of ammunition....A LOAD OF 38

All top-end ammo comes in 50 round boxes. It's not sold to civilians because they're happily being gouged with 20 round boxes of the same stuff. If people stop buying it, the 50 round boxes will magically appear.

Why are we accepting this practice? The excise tax isn't making up the difference in price.

That may very well be the case. But as I said in an earlier post, if it isn't in the stores, you can't buy it.

No, the 50-round boxes will not magically appear if people stop buying the 20- and 25-round boxes. The big LGSs here don't order ammo every day or even every week, especially in certain calibers. I know the owners of all of them, and that isn't how it works. Plus, if the distributors don't have 50-round boxes, the stores can't get them, and neither can the customers.

If I want some Hornady .357 Critical Defense loads, you think I'm going to wait two or three weeks to see if the LGS gets in some 50-round boxes. No, I won't wait, especially when there's a stack of 25-round boxes right on the shelf in front of me.

I'd love to find some 50-round boxes of Federal .45 Colt JSPs, but I'm beginning to think I bought the last box in the county weeks ago.

I like to shoot, and I shoot a lot because I need to stay competent with my guns. I haven't gotten back into reloading yet, but I will. Until then, I'll buy what I need to let me get in the range time.

Hate to tell you this but just last week I bought two boxes of that ammo at my local wallyworld here in the peoples republic of NY.

I was thinking just a little bit longer time frame than a couple weeks to fix this.

No it doesn't. Some are either 20 or bulk.
I'm sure you can find some isolated examples of anything. Gold-Dots, Ranger, HST, Golden Saber, Critical Duty, etc all come in 50 round boxes.

Yes, some do. Golden Saber I have only seen in 25rd boxes. But no Barnes, Corbon, Wilson Combat, Asym, Buffalo Bore, etc.

As to your question why people buy it; b/c they want it!

It's a marketing strategy and it works. Buy top end ammo per 20/25rds and this way it stays affordable to almost anyone. If you want the lowest price per round buy bulk.

That's the way it is.

Stay affordable? You buy about the same amount of ammo no matter what. $.60 is more affordable than $1.00. I suppose you could get by with a single 20 round box for a revolver. An auto is going to require at bare minimum a little more. I didn't really think everyone was overjoyed that they were being forced into buying overpriced 20 round boxes by the ammo companies. I guess I was wrong. The ammo companies should start doing the little 6 round cards like Glaser.

Golden Saber absolutely come in 50 round boxes. Corbon use to come in 50 round boxes as well. I have some sitting here.

I often buy 20 or 25 rounds of high value self defense carry ammo, because I know I don't need more, and I'll be buying the next whiz kid ammo when I tire of the one I just bought. No need to have an extra 30 rounds just to burn, when I can spend that cash on practice ammo
