I've been shooting my 650 recently for trigger control practice.

The trigger pull is pretty much the same as my other j frames I carry.

I never carry my 650, but practice with it as ammo is cheaper.

I went to a lgs and asked if they had 22 mag.

All they had was several boxes of Speer Gold Dot -- rare stuff. They had a limit of two boxes.

Don't know if I want to shoot it for practice or save it in case I ever carry the 650.

Who knows when I'll see it again?

Maybe tomorrow I'll go back and get two more boxes.

These days you have to shoot what you can get.

Are the rest of you finding 22 mag easy to obtain?

Yeah I never see it up my way. I shoot 22 mag from a rifle so usually the CCI and Winchester is the stuff I usually find locally. Would like to try the Speer stuff though.

I can find it but it has shot past expensive on its way to the stratosphere.
I am able to find .40cal for less than most .22mag and will shoot that when I find the time.

I agree with ddixie844, go back and get what you can. A box to shoot and a box to keep JIC.

Yeah I was used to paying around $15 for the same CCI but scored when Walmart had the same for $10.50 last summer. They ran dry recently and have to keep checking. Visited my LGS last month and found they had Hornady Critical Defense 45 grain for $18.99 per 50. Now that was a bit steep!!

I've bought 22 mag twice recently. Once, from the farm store for $14/box and again from WM for $12/box. Think I bought two boxes each time. Only 22 mag I have is a bolt action rifle that only gets used for hunting on public ground that allows 22's, so I don't need a lot.

Here on the crazy coast most of the LGS are out most of the time.
I saw the following from a private party:
.22WMR
CCI 22 WMR Maxi-Mag 50rd=$20
Winchester Lead Free 22 WMR 50rd $25

.22LR:
Federal HV Match 40GR Solid 1200FPS 50 rd X 2 Boxes =100rd $5/BOX
Norma Lead Free Eco-Speed 24gr 50rd X 6=300rds $20/box

22WMR is spotty near me... Was able to get it for $12.99-14.99 for 50 rounds just about anywhere, some shops that had some still have it for that, I was getting the 125 round round milk carton packs of Maxi Mags for like $26 at walmart, bought probably 8 or 9 of those before it got real crazy, and it's all but gone everywhere now.

Well, I went back today and tried to buy another 2 boxes of the 22 WMR Gold Dots and they were sold out.

But I did find another couple boxes of the same ammo in the back of my ammo cabinet, so I probably have enough already. 200 Rounds.

Inflation

Yeah, 22 ammo is out of sight!

Back in 1980 I bought three 100rd CCI 22 Mini-Mags for $2.88 ($0.03rd) at K-Mart. I just checked a normal "inflation calculator" and 2021 prices should be $9.19 (219% inflation).

A far far cry of what we actually have! Lucky for me, I added several bricks of 22LR back during the "O" ammo cycle for $0.06rd thanks to a member of this forum! Granted, I got this back in 2013, but still very generous! You know who you are, THANKS AGAIN!

IMHO in the J-Frame 22 Magnum is a better choice than the 38 Spl. for self-defense. Speer Gold Dot is a awesome cartridge. I have a Taurus 8 round snubby that is very accurate with Speer Gold Dots. It performs very well in Youtube test videos.

I like the Taurus and 22 Magnum combination that I made a "Bug-Out" using it. I have 500 rounds of Speer Gold Dot, the gun in a black nylon holster, a Marbles ammo caddy that clips on the belt and ear plugs stored in a surplus 30 caliber ammo can. I added a couple of small pieces of foam to fill the air spaces. I can literally throw the loaded ammo can without any concern about damage to the contents.
