Had a quick look at a 25-2 nickel plated. The serial number is all I really looked at as far as stamping go and it started with an "N". Is the "N" for the frame size or for Nickel? Thanks.

More: Looking in the Blue Book I see a model 25 "Classic" that was made in nickel. The one I looked at had 25-2 stamped where the serial number was stamped. What would be stamped there for the "Classic"?

"N" is the serial number prefix. It is part of the serial number.

There should be some "N" stamps on the grip frame, under the grips. Look on the back of the cylinder as well.

If there are no "N" stampings visible, this may have been a blue finished revolver that was later nickel plated.

I see the model 25 came in nickel and was called the "Classic". If this gun is the 25 "Classic" how would it be marked? This one had 25-2 stamped on it. Thanks.

There are probably a few Model 25-2s finished in nickel by S&W, but they would have been special orders as this revolver was only cataloged with a blue finish. The Model 25 "Classic" listed on the S&W website is also finished in blue and is in 45 Colt caliber. The Model 25-2 was discontinued long before the Classic line of revolvers came out.

You're also more likely to see factory conversions to nickel [R-N] stamp.
See the below completed auction:
Smith & Wesson 25-2 45ACP Five Inch Nickel ca 1977 NR! - Revolvers at GunBroker.com : 848645873

Thanks

Thanks all for the info. The one I looked at is a 6 1/2" pinned barrel, model 25-2, 1955. .45acp. I think made in the mid to late 1970's. There is a star on the back of the cylinder and the R N in a box under the grips. So it is a factory refinish. The one on Gunbroker had 26 bids and sold for $1533. I guess the one I am looking at should be about the same?
thanks again all for the help.

GB pricing is usually high- but certainly over $1000 for a nice one.
