I've wanted a nice shooter Model 27 in either 4 or 5 inch barrel to go with my model 28 4 inch. Found this one today on a road trip to just "look around". It had just been traded that morning. 5 inch TT and TH with the ramp front sight. Was wearing late 70's Pachmyr rubber and came with a Bianchi thumb break holster plus original Walnut target stocks. Has some odd freckling on the right side of the barrel and serious holster wear on the trigger guard and just below the hammer on the backstrap. Very light turn line, perfect chambers and bore suggest it spent much time in the holster and little time being fired. Nice lock-up and timing with sweet trigger. Got it for $455 out the door. Spent half an hour doing my usual clean-inspect and wax. Next up-load some ammo for the range trip.

Serial number N494XXX dates it to 1978 according to the SC of S&W

Close-up details. The back sight, top strap and barrel checkering are perfect. Most of the finish issues were on the right side and trigger guard.

Congratulations on an excellent find. I seldom see any N-frame Smiths for $500. Locally a 5" 27-2 would be at least $600 and probably more. To find a mechanically sound gun like that for under $500 is an excellent buy to my thinking. Enjoy!

Too bad the 27 had been neglected so. Nice to see you got her cleaned up for Saturday night, guess you will just have to keep her fed and warm.

I really like your 27 for a couple of reasons. I like that models checkering across the top strap. I only have one N-frame, a model 25, and it doesn't have that.

I also like the idea of having a gun in "shooter" condition. The finish on my 25 in probably 98%, and I find myself treating it accordingly. Your 27 would be perfect for any use and it still looks great. Nice gun.

You stole that one.

I'd say so too. I picked up one off layaway yesterday, that set me back a bit more, but it was in the presentation case, with all the tools and papers. It had been fired, but looks great. I haven't had time to take any good pictures of it yet, but hope no one minds if I post what I got here.

Crappy cell phone picture at the dealer.

I took a couple out back as the light was fading. This was the only one that didn't have a lot of flash reflection.

That is an absolute steal, I prefer shooters, mainly because that's what I can afford! You got an outstanding gun at an even better price.
Well done!

Nice find CajunBass. The five inch N frames have nearly perfect proportions. Your has some nice looking stocks too. The stocks on the one I snagged yesterday are extremely plain. I was very glad they came with the gun though. They had it on display with the Pachmyrs. I told the counter guy "Too bad it has these ugly rubbers instead of its original wood." He said "wait, there is a box down here with the holster and it has another set of grips." Cool. That shop treats me pretty well on used purchases. I would buy more guns there except it is a 1.5 hour trip one way for me.

I get the feeling this is "Dads old revolver" that sat in its holster for a long time after its last tour of duty on his hip. Then he passed it on to his heirs and they beat feet to the gun store to trade it. Was traded on an AR-15 style rifle.

You're probably correct, sad actually. Probably got "nothing" as a trade either. However, these are opportunities for the rest of us.

And you Sir have an excellent shooter, enjoy.

Better get the cuffs out, that was a steal. I agree it was probably someone elses old gun. I was in a gun shop about two years back when a pre-29 walked in with a case with the matching grips in about 85%, correct box and tools all there. Turns out it belonged to an uncle now no longer drawing breath. THe newphew inherited and wanted to get rid of it and if I recall he sold it for $950. You see it all the time these days.

What a buy! I'd have made three trips after that one! Congratulations! You might want to check to see how much Smith would charge to re-blue it.

I finally found a 5 inch 27-2 a couple of years ago. It had apparently laid in a desk drawer, the bluing on the cylinder was pretty beat up while the rest of the gun was near perfect. It also had goodyears on it.

I sent it down to Alex Hamilton who refinished the cylinder for me. Now it's one of those guns I'll never sell. Still searching for the exact "right" set of grips for it. These are from a late model S&W Classic, and they'll do for now.

Range Report

Some guns you just can't wait to shoot, and the 27-2 we are talking about is one of those guns. I loaded 240 rounds of LSWC 158 grain .357 loads yesterday morning and took the 27 and my 28-2 4 inch to the range.

The 27-2 is one fine shooting revolver! Didn't spit any lead. Lock-up and timing perfect SA and DA. The sights were even close to perfect. Put a pretty set of Coco Bolo Hogues on it for range duty. Those N frame target stocks are not comfortable when you shot a lot of ammo.

I don't have any worthy targets to show. I have a bad case of tendinitis in my right elbow. I get two or three really good shots off, then the pain gets to me and the shots wander a bit, though I did keep every shot in the 8-9-10 kill zones on a 50 ft. combat target at 20 yards. The soup cans were dead meat. I love to chase cans with a good revolver.

The wife was shooting our 28-2 then I haded her the 27, She decided it is now one of her favorite guns, so I spent the second half of our range session shooting the 28-2. Surprising difference in muzzle flip between the 4 in. and 5 in. barrels on the same frame.

Now I need to find a 3.5 inch M27:eek:

That was a great deal. Too bad about the neglect but no sense crying over spilt milk. If it had been perfect, it would have set you back a lot more, so look at the bright side.

I counsel against a re-blue. But each to his own.
