27-2 question

I recently came across a 27-2 4” that’s matte/satin finish. It looks completely original, stampings are deep and clean with raised edges. No signs of being refinished. Did S&W ever make a matte finished 27-2?

I don't know if they ever made any in matt finish, standard finish was bright blue. The 28-2 had the matt finish.

Post a pic, and specifically the model number, and SN, if possible. This sounds like a 28-2...I know some 28s were made in the polished blue vs. satin but have not heard / read / seen model 27s getting anything but Bright Blue (the most polished S&W blue). Also, bear in mind 27-2 in 4" was produced only for 3-4 years, they are relatively rare. The SN may help us with that as well...

27s were all high polish as far as I am aware, but I have also heard that S&W might mis-stamp some or use old parts or put unusual barrel lengths on models here and there and that there can often be some oddballs.
If there is no checkering on top then I’d suggest it would be an mis-stamped 28 “Highway Patrolman”?
Does it say that on the barrel or “357 Magnum”?
A picture would be great.

If the frame's top strap is not checkered/knurled, then it is a Model 28. All Model 27's had a checkered/knurled top strap. Same goes for the sight rib on the barrel.

What stansdds said, they made a 28 with a matt blue for law enforcement/duty finish is my understanding, but basically the same gun so maybe, like said, it's a mis-stamped gun or someone had it re-finished? I didn't know they lacked the checkering and knurling on top, but that makes sense they were intended for duty. Seems like this would be a tell-tale of the gun? It should be P&R'd if it's a 27-2 also.
Show the gun and we can tell you if that's the case.

Yes, easiest tell is the top strap - the finely checkered on M27 vs. plan (no checkering) on M28 - both on the drame, as well as into the barrel.

Welcome back to the Forum! It would help greatly if you would Post a couple of pictures of your Model 27-2. As others have stated, it might be a mismarked Model 28-2 Highway Patrolman.

Most likely a M27 then. Make sure you check the top-strap, and the barrel top as well. I will post a pic a little later, both the topstraps and the barrels, as you can tell by those as well.

If a M27 indeed based on the above, inspect for refinish. A M27 should be bright blue polish, if M27 indeed, i would suspect refinish.

The backstrap should be serrated or grooved. The topstrap of the frame, where the rear sight is located, should be checkered on a Model 27.

4" 27 was later and the blue wasn't the same as the earlier guns. I wouldn't call it matte but it's not the infinitely deep blue of the 27-2 era and earlier.

The back strap should be grooved/serrated. If the back strap has been checkered, then it is definitely a refinished piece. Only the top of the frame and top of the barrel's sight rib should be checkered on a Model 27.

My four inch blue is stunning and I think much better than my BIL’s 6.5 incher.
